Aldous Huxley, take on spirituality and the base of all religions as seen through the eyes of saints and spiritual leaders. It's a life changing beautifully written book. Aldous Huxley is one of the greatest minds of our time. (As an advice, this was my first spiritual book outside the Bible, so it was kind of a Perennial Philosophy crash course for me. Some words are difficult to understand, so it's better to have a background on other religions to fully understand.)

This is a book that I think I will be referencing back to for the rest of my life. If you basically want to understand the entire perspective of a Western thinker on the commonalities of Eastern religion and mysticism as well as Christian mystic thought, this is the book. Think of it as the complete tutorial on what people *think* they're saying when they utter the cliche "I'm not religious but I'm spiritual." Now if a person were truly that, and very intelligent as well, then this book explains how they might think about God, self, universe, time, idolatry, salvation, truth, good, evil, immortality, mortification, charity, prayer... yeah, you name it everything you've stuffed in a closet in the back of your mind and called it 'religion' is presented here from the mystic point of view and collected wisdom of multiple 'religions'.This might properly be called, at least I will, the set of ultimate goals for the self, or perhaps the self-less perfection of the realization of the divine in the individual and the purpose of all human consciousness. I'm not used to speaking this way, it will take me some time to get through all of the material in this course of study, but I can feel it working on me.Several years ago I wrote that all I care about is wisdom. This is true. But one tends to think of wisdom as an attribute of the self. The Perennial Philosophy extends that challenge beyond the self (and yet within the self) towards the human infinite. So instead of the pursuit and capture of wisdom like a trophy to put on your mantle and show off, the Perennial Philosophy explains that this is an attainment of psychic, spiritual as well as intellectual dimensions. There's some speculation in this which is especially clunky in the dated volume which contemporaries more well versed in psychology will easily spot. Also Huxley had been taken in by claims of faith healing and ESP that should not be taken seriously, but he seems to understand this. Also the book gets a bit murky in dealing with the concepts of time vis a vis Time and Eternity. And yet the book becomes quite persuasive in describing how nations and religions and philosophies that deal with reality in progressive time rather than in eternal timelessness, inevitably make bloody violent sacrifices to time (God the destroyer of all things, in time).Huxley presents a convincing case for the unification of purposeful thought in this volume by taking contextualized quotes from a variety of wise ancients and mystics. It puts, for me, God back where God should belong in all thought, and the discipline of finding God central in human moral purpose.I am convinced that this is the kind of material that is central to the human experience. It clears up a lot of things.

This book is nothing short of a masterpiece. Not only because it's content is brilliant, but because Huxley put it together with such brightness, that only a genius mind could do it. The Perennial Philosophy is a manual for anyone interested in Eastern Philosophical and Religious Thought. It goes deep inside the heart and teachings of the most influential Mystics that ever lived. The book is practical, clear and detailed, covering important subjects that would take many students years to collect from several different sources.Huxley proves brilliantly the Unity, Truth and Wisdom behind most religions. They all share a common source and ground that passes from faith, repentance and death to self into a divine nature of pure love and joy. He covers topics such as "Personality, Sanctity, Divine Incarnation, God in the World, Charity, Truth, Grace and Free Will, Good and Evil, Rituals", etc. So many important topics for one interesting in pursuing a divine path with a sincere heart toward God. Here are just a few quotes to inspire you to read this book:"Liberation cannot be achieved except by the perception of the identity of the individual spirit with the universal spirit""The best that can be said for ritualistic legalism is that it improves conduct. It does little , however, to alter character and nothing of itself to modify consciousnesses""What could begin to deny self, if there were not something in man different from self?""Love seeks no cause beyond itself and no fruit; it is its own fruit, its own enjoyment.""To the extent that there is attachment to "I", "Me" and "Mine", there is not attachment to, and therefore no unitive knowledge of, the divine ground""Everything is ours, provided that we regard nothing as our property""To find or know God in reality, by any outward proofs, or by anything but by God himself made manifest and self-evident in you, will never be your case either here or hereafter. For neither God, nor heaven, nor hell, nor the devil, nor the world, and the flesh, can be any otherwise knowable in you, or by you, but by their own existence and manifestation in you. And all pretended knowledge of any of these things, beyond or without this self-evident sensibility of their birth within you, is only such knowledge of them, as the blind man hath of that light, that never entered into him.""You are as holy as you wish to be""if most of us remain ignorant of ourselves, it is because self-knowledge is painful and we prefer the pleasures of illusion.""Turning to God without turning from Self"- the formula is absurdly simple; and yet, simple as it is, it explains all the follies and iniquities committed in the name of religion"Enjoy the book!

There are 2 items that are necessary for a successful religion. First is a moral code or high standard of living, the second is a purpose to life inherent in the future, whether the present life future or the eternal future. This provides an additional capacity of long term stability. So it is with the long-lasting of world's religions, while the others have a basis of sand and eventually dissipate. This is excellent study for a depth in religion thought.

This is a book that reveals the basic development of spirituality without regard to religions. It could be thought of as the backbone of religions without the limitations. It is a scholarly work but could be of interest to anyone seeking a higher way.

This is a must have classic on our shared human values and philosophy. Aldous Huxley is a superb writer, who has applied all his skills in presenting to us the timeless shared ideas that can be found in multiple cultures and faiths throughout the world. His insights can help to heal the wounds of division and alienation that cause so much unnecessary suffering in the world today. This book should be required reading for every teacher and preacher.

#10,787 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The author stretches across a large spectrum of human traits and flaws in evolution's "best efforts" incremental approach. Ranging from "why do young women prefer men who take risks" to the outsized number of head colds that human have compared to animals, the book was chuck full of delightful ideas. I hadn't really considered how many tradeoffs there are in evolution (nothing comes without a cost) and how difficult it is for nature to make fundamental (versus incremental) changes. Relatively easy to lose a little hair so we can cool ourselves and run down exhausted prey. No so much to get rid of unneeded bones. If something is just there but not taking up resources, evolution often just leaves it alone, so we carry a lot of baggage from previous forms. We also have mental traits that served us once but are dysfunctional now. I'm going to look for more stuff from this guy. He can write a good thriller, even if it is mostly fact based science. He gets more philosophic as the book progresses .... many interesting possibilities for our species.

It was a fun book! And it was just what I expected. I was raised in a sort fundamentalist setting, so I deeply enjoy the freedom of mind flight. The accumulated errors every single species packs around in its DNA is probably as certain a proof as can ever be imagined in support of our evolutionary past. Lents has created a handy little reference book documenting such errors. Well written. Thanks

I bet you have often asked yourself, "What is wrong with people?"Well, now you can find out. This book is a well written, scientific account of many types of flaws in human beings: physical, genetic, reproductive, behavioral.I thought this book was going to make me sad, and I would quickly need to read a book on how great human bodies are, to make up for it. But, that wasn't the case. I actually finished the book feeling optimistic. Yes, we all need to be grateful that we made it through odds stacked against us, and we became functioning individuals (the reproductive section was a little scary). But, the book was largely a testament to how humans can triumph over adversity, how we can do more than make do with limitations, but we can also thrive. And, we are now developing technology that could even fix some of our flaws. For example, the large portion of our genome that is junk DNA (copied for generations, but serving no purpose) seems like a blank canvas to make improvements. Maybe we could have wings without giving up our arms? I am kidding about the wings, but it seems like we could at least reactivate our damaged GULO gene and make our own Vitamin C. That, and other improvements, could be what makes long distance space travel feasible for our descendants.Another point that runs through the book, but is not stated often enough is this: We all have our strengths and weaknesses (physical, mental, behavioral). There are not good people. There are not bad people. We are ALL sometimes good and sometimes bad. If we could all internalize this point, I think we would be less arrogant about ourselves and less judgmental of others.

I am still reading this book. Some of it is interesting and informative, some of it simplifies biology, a reader has to believe in evolution to accept it all, and some things I just cannot agree that it is a design flaw. But, what do I know? I am still thinking it is better to have all those bones in the ankle .

Very enjoyable read. Humorous and informative. Definitely not a text book. If you’re looking for scientific details, this is not the book for you. If you’re looking for higher-level info, this works. I found myself laughing at times, also found myself doing my best Spock imitation by saying, “interesting” a number of times.

Some claim that humans are perfect by design; it isn't so. Written for the lay reader, this book thoroughly debunks notions of perfection and innate superiority. Cephalopods have much better eye-design, and humans get way too many colds. For good or ill, we share many issues with all vertebrate critters. Read this and understand the why and wherefore of many of our ills, and at least an equal number of hereditary adaptations that make life better. The writing style is engaging and entertaining while being instructive and chock-full of facts.

We humans should become less arrogant and less confident about what we believe is right or wrong. We are just a carrier of ATGC configurations. If we understand and accept our fragility, our life should not be so hard any more. We are only a random combination of genes. We have nothing to be proud of, or to feel special about ourselves.Because we are not special, we may be able to live casually. We don't have to accomplish anything. Being born to the world and being alive for a while itself justify the meaning of our existence. We have lived as long as the universe, and so did everything else. Buddha said if you reach enlightenment you would overcome the boundary of life and death. I am not special and I don't have to try hard to be special. I can just follow the flow of my mind and the great nature,, and have a nice dream before I rest forever. The universe should also be flawed as much as I am flawed. Being flawed and fragile is a universal principle. The people who believe themselves flawless is a fool. Any belief, even God cannot be perfect. It is comforting to know that everybody is essentially very fragile. I don't have to try hard to become perfect. We, the human beings are nothing. I just need to dream a very nice dream. This book is good because it lets us know that we are okay to be wrong. Actually we cannot be right or wrong as much as an ant cannot be right or wrong.

A fun, informative scientifically based book. The way the author breaks down our anatomical faults, vestigial uselessness, strengths, and weaknesses destroys any serious notion that we are products of an intelligent designer -- be it alien or divine. Highly recommend.

Tony DiTerlizzi is a man of many talents. Besides being an artist, he's also the co-author of Spiderwick Chronicles, something I didn't know before I bought this book. That's impressive.Realms: The Roleplaying Art of Tony DiTerlizzi is a 224-page hardcover that features more than 2 decades of art. You'll see the beautiful illustrations he created for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Planescape, Magic: The Gathering as well as personal unpublished art.The artworks are fantasy themed, and most are character art. There are fully coloured illustrations as well as line art. DiTerlizzi has been compared to Arthur Rackham (who's also listed as an inspiration) a few times in this book and there are indeed similarities in their style. However, DiTerlizzi's work easily stands on their own with the imaginative characters and colouring. I like the earthy warm style present in the paintings and even the sketches, whether pen or pencil. There's also a pleasing caricature feel to the characters. The creature designs or the fantasy characters all look wonderful. All the artworks come with commentary from DiTerlizzi and those really provide the additional depth for the book. There are also text by other artists and colleagues such as Brom, Guillermo del Toro, Neil Gaiman, Iain McCaig, Donato Giancola and many more. This book is also available in Kindle format. But I recommend getting the hardcover because the hardcover so much bigger and you get to appreciate the artworks better. It definitely more satisfying with a hardcover copy.Highly recommended to fans and those who love fantasy art.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

I don't even know how many years ago now I found myself stuck in a comic shop with my husband once again looking for something to occupy my time. I'm an "in-and-out" kind of shopper - the husband is slooooow. He likes to look at and touch everything in the store. The downside of this for me is boredom; the upside is that I sometimes find stuff I would have missed. One day I wandered over to the gaming section. It had been years since I'd played AD&D, but I was intrigued by the concept of Planescape, which was more of a thinking setting than most games I had seen and much more inline with the independent campaign I was running. I picked it up, and therein I met the dynamic work of Tony DiTerlizzi.Wow. DiTerlizzi's art inspires me. His characters can be pretty exotic and strange, but something about them remains human and relateable to me. I could envision the world in which they'd live and painting in the details around them was simple. Even something as tired as a Beholder sprang to new life in his hands.I've paid attention to DiTerlizzi over the years, as I have done with the few other artists who have resonated with me, but was still surprised to discover on yet another slow crawl through a comic shop the existence of this retrospective. It's a stunning book, collecting a broad spectrum of DiTerlizzi's gaming art with interesting context for the work and the progress of his career. I'm delighted to have it and have it on prominent display in my house. It's a pleasure to pick up and rifle through it for me and for guests.Good stuff. I recommend.

Love Tony's work and I have the Kindle and hardback version of this art book. The problem with the kindle version is that it does not seem to handle art books, or maybe just this art book, well. Rotations and zoom don't seem to work. ******** Revised Review ********* Comixology (also and Amazon App) opened my Kindle copy of Realms at no extra cost! All the problems I had with how kindle handled Tony's Master piece are fixed with Comixology. Panning, rotating, zooming all work on my tablet and phone allowing me to enjoy Art that has captivated me since DnD 2nd Edition! Tony is a true fantasy art visionary! And IMHO his blending of old and new styles make his Kobolds the best!

It would be hard to over-praise this book. Gorgeous, full of great art and insightful commentary from DiTerlizzi, friends and collaborators. The only downside to this book is that it isn't the first of a series looking at other gaming superstars, like Erol Otus.

Probably one of the best art books I have purchased in a long while. DiTerlizzi's work is amazing as always, this book brings be back to my youth, in the days when I played AD&D and White Wolf's Changeling: The Dreaming with my brother. Great book, and really is under priced for it's size and quality.Even if you aren't old enough to remember the days when D&D was owned by TSR and not Wizards of the Coast/Hasbro, it's a great buy for anyone who loves fantasy art and RPGs.

I know Tony and have enjoyed his work for many years. This book was a nice cross section of his work. It also included comments by many of his contemporaries.

Great collection RPG art, i couldn't expect less from this illustration master

A great look at Diterlizzi's art along with a lot of the inspiration behind it. This is a great book both for fantasy and art fans.

An excellent retrospective of the artist's early work.

The Mongol's meteoric conquest of Asia and China brought their vast armies into contact with the peripheral European states. Most of the Russian city states were easily destroyed however most Western Europeans failed realize the threat or to organize any defense. However, after the fall and destruction of Kiev in 1240-1, the rout of a Magyar army in Hungary, and the occupation of Hungary the Pope caused the Western Princes began belated attempts for defense against the potential invasion. Europe had not faced an external threat of this proportion for hundreds of years: the Magyar's had been mostly pacified, the Vikings had stopped their wholesale raids, and the Muslim states' great expansion had slowed due too the presence of Crusader armies in the Middle East. News of the Mongol threat had reached the various leaders of the West - the Queen of Georgia the Prince of Galicia had all sent desperate appeals for aid. Fortunately for Europe, the death of Khan Ogedey in 1241 and the discord between the Mongol leaders in the West caused their armies to withdraw from Western Europe's borders. The first primary source in this volume is John of Plano Carpini's 'History of the Mongols.' John was a 65 year old massively fat Franciscan monk without ANY knowledge of oriental languages. His mission was to spy on the Mongols to see if they were as threatening and powerful as reported and to provide suggestions as to ways to defend against them. His mission was supported by Pope Innocent IV and he set out on the 5,000 miles journey in 1245. John of Plano Carpini met with the Great Khan Guyuk and this text outlines the characters and customs of the Mongols, the food they ate, the roles of men and women, descriptions of their armies, their history, religion, government, clothes, housing, and even accurate accounts of the genealogy of the royal family. The most fascinating part of his account is his description of how to wage war against them. If Christendom wishes to save itself, the army "should be organized in the same way as the Tartar army," it ought to "have scouts in every direction," and "the Christians should also beware of their usual tendency of over-expenditure, lest they be obliged to go home on account of lack of money and the Tartars destroy the whole earth." This Chronicle is easy to read and is the first real contact with the Mongols by the West. It is interspersed with hilarious statements of Western disgust with Mongol customs, "they do not wash their dishes," "they do not wash their clothes," and if a "virgin commits fornication with anyone, they kill BOTH the man and the woman."The second group of documents are Two Bulls of Pope Innocent IV Addressed to the Emperor of the Tartars. These explain the tenants of the Christian faith and beg the Mongols to be peaceful and to do not harm to the envoys. The third document is The Narrative of Benedict the Pole. This is a brief relation by John of Plano Carpini's Polish companion dictated by him to a prelate of Cologne upon his return from Asia. It paraphrases the two bulls and provides little to John of Plano Carpini's much longer and more detailed account. The fourth document is Guyuk Khan's Letter to Pope Innocent IV (1246). The Khan states that he does not understand the Pope's request for him to be peaceful since he has the Mongol God's favor which is the reason the Mongols have already conquered most of Asia. He demands that the Pope "say with a sincere ear" the he will submit and serve him.The Journey of William of Rubrick is the second main primary source and is even more interesting than John's due to the fact that William of Rubrick voluntarily set out in the employ of the French king to convert the Mongols to Christianity. His account has the "fullest and most authentic information on the Mongol Empire in its pre-Chinese phase that we posses." Brother William's book is a straightforward account of his journey and his personal experiences in full detail. Brother William describes the endless drinking parties of Karakorum with men of every race and religion, the great disputations between representatives from the major religions, meetings with the Khan, arguments and alliances with Nestorian Christians who were lived all across Asia (even as far as China), difficulties with his constantly drunk interpreter, and revelations he had concerning the geographic errors of St. Isidore's Encyclopedia as he wandered across the vast expanses of the steppes. This is probably one of the most interesting and vivid Medieval accounts that I have ever read! The last document group includes The Letters of John of Monte Corvino, a Letter of Brother Peregrine Bishop of Zaytun, and a Letter of Andrew of Perugia. Although "inferior in literary and historical value" to John of Plano Carpini and William of Rubruck's narratives they are of great importance for the history of Christendom since they record the beginnings of the Catholic missionary activity in China. This collection of primary sources is superbly accompanied by Christopher Dawson's introduction. He outlines all necessary background information, the rise of the Mongols, the response of Christendom, the eventual alliances between the Mongols and the West against the Muslims in the Holy Land, different Christian sects (Nestorians etc), and analysis of the accounts and their authors. The only thing missing from this volume is a map. However, this does not at all destract from this astoundingly thorough and enlightening volume of a neglected area of Medieval history. A MUST BUY for the Medieval Historian!

This book is light in interpretations, heavy on reports imbeded in the historical era by the participants. Some references to places are difficult since, names, places, nations and proples names change through time.

Before I begin; why do reviewers feel the need to divulge the whole story in a review? Is the book exciting or boring, does it hold your attention, are the characters developed or not, grammar, can you put it down, long or short etc. Leave the story telling to the author for goodness sake. I just don't understand it.This was a good read, more psychological and less action than the first. The ending in my opinion a bit disheartening as Ballard heads for retirement. I hope there's a follow-up.

Clever writing. Just when you think you got it right it changes direction. Who's the killer? When most of likely ones are found dead where do you go from there?

Loved the continued story and characters and the introduction of the new and very interesting characters that created kind of a sub plot within this storyline.

Many thanks to the author / Joffe Books / Books n All Promotion / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime thriller. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.Detective Matt Ballard wants nothing more than to retire. He's put in his 30 years and his girlfriend have made plans, including marriage. They are both still recovering from the last case they worked... particularly Liz who is healing much slower. Matt has agreed to stay on as they have a shortage of detectives.Grace Repton is engaged to marry Jeremy Reader ... a serial killer of 5 women. He is behind prison bars and has sent Grace to Matt with a message ... Jeremy has stated that there will be someone copycatting his crimes and he wants Matt to catch him and stop him.Can Matt really trust a serial killer and the woman who says she loves him?But then the first two bodies are found ... mutilated and killed with heart-shaped skin patches taken from their bodies ... just like the original killer, Jeremy Reader. This is a well-written fast-paced thriller filled with memorable characters that jump off the page. With the balance of professional life vs personal life , the characters come across as very credible. The suspense starts out a little slow, concentrating more of the personal side of things. But as bodies fall, one right after the other, the suspense grows and grows until it explodes like a helium balloon filled with hydrogen and oxygen.

I received this book free from Joffe books for an honest review and I'm so glad I did. This is the second book about DCI Matthew Ballard.Serial killer Jeremy Reader was caught by DCI Matthew Ballard years ago. Reader's fiance comes to Ballard telling him that a young man named Alex has written to Reader and wants to copy the kills. Ballard has to decide if the threat is real and if can he trust Reader and a woman who is in love with a serial killer. Can he trust the psychiatrist's that say Reader is a changed man?Soon the killings start and it's a race to find the killer. Ballard's team of detectives is spread thin as they are also working a case of men being killed who have Lithuanian family ties. As if that wasn't enough to deal with, the woman Ballard loves is facing a health crisis. This is a great suspense read with a surprising twist at the end. The characters are fully developed and the descriptions of the environment were so vivid and real that I could picture it.I can't wait for more DCI Ballard stories from author Joy Ellis.

Grace Repton comes into the police station to talk to Detective Matt Ballard. She has information, she says that can stop a murder from happening. Grace's fiancé, the infamous serial killer Jeremy Reader, and he tells her one of his disciples is going to use Reader's methods of killing. Now Reader wants to help catch this person, but can he be trusted? There is also three other murdered victims found with a distinctive tattoo on them. Is this a gang related problem or something else all together? Either way time is not on the side of the police. The characters will draw you in, and you will be hoping things at least slow down for the police so they can get a handle on these killers. I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of this book from Joffe.

The characters are strong and well defined. It's a tad gruesome at times but I guess real murders are not very pretty. I enjoyed the book and would have given it more stars but the way the investigation danced around the obvious suspect was lame.

This is another thrilling murder mystery, written by a master of them---Joy Ellis! DCI Matt Ballard has one last case before retirement and what an adventure. This has more twists, contradictions, conflicts, and confusion than any other she has written. It also has another mind blowing conclusion, as every decision reached turns out to be wrong! Enjoy but be ready to read it through to the exciting end.

Required for Class but did not follow the W3C guidelines. I did follow the instruction but I did not really know why one method was chosen over another (seemed unclear). All the code I followed using this book would not pass the W3C CSS Validator so I would have to make changes. The book says it is using CSS and has a couple of chapters but it used tables throughout. It all ran together and very disjointed to me. I was unsure of why and I think a textbook should answer those questions, the "what", "why" and best practices. This book had no heart, conviction or philosophy. It was just a step by step manual with lots of pretty pictures and I was unsure why I was following those particular steps. If you want to be a great webmaster, I would not purchase this book.

This purchase was one of the best I have had because:1) Seller provided all necesary information to asses book content and depth, and degree of book physical conditionsHis information was accurate, professional and on time2) Book itself details and qualtiy of packaging and its protection from damage on deliveryI thank you the seller for this experience and wish him best luckI will get the time to provide review of book technical content in Amazon pertinent area of books review

This was a gift and the recipient was happy with it

great

This book was a little hard to read and it kind of put me to sleep. It got the job done, I passed my class but barley. Probably why I switched majors, programing puts me to sleep.

So far, this book has been very good.Seems like everything is really easy. -Hope I can actually use some of this stuff in the real world.

great book and just what i need

The Book is great and very easy to read and digest! Even those of us who do not have lot's of background can go through this and gradually become very good at creating their web pages.
