good book about the tariqah tijaniyah
This is a book that cuts through the fiction and prejudices about Sufism and takes you in very close to a real Sufi Saint. It is not strictly a biography of Shaykh Ahmad Tijani, though you do learn about his life, and the political, social, and economic factors that played a role in the origins of the Tariqa Muhammadiyya movement (the "Path of Muhammad"). But it is biographical introduction to the Sufi Path within Islam, in one of it's most remarkable Sufi Orders.Dr. Wright begins this work with an excellent overview of the world in which Shaykh Tijani lived. He shows the development of ideas and methods of devotion in the various Sufi Orders in that region. These were the Orders that Shaykh Tijani was in contact with, studied, and participated in before he began teaching. He then discusses Shaykh Tijani's life, his education, travels, and his interactions with other important and famous Sufi Saints. And he ties these ideas into the development of Shaykh Tijani's own ideas and teachings through his own writings and the writings of his students.Because of his approach, Dr. Wright is able to provide the reader with a thorough view of the Tariqa's position in history, it's relationship to other Sufi Orders, and it's significance as a valid, Islamic tradition. He clearly documents throughout the book using the Holy Qur'an, Hadith, the writings of the Saints, Shaykhs, the practices of the Tariqa, and interviews he conducted with significant Shaykhs in the Tariqa Tijaniyya. With careful scholarship, Professor Wright is able to look into how the Tariqa was uniquely oriented to advance Islam deep into the African continent, and to many other places around the globe as far afield as Indonesia, the Balkans, and Africa. Dr. Wright's extensive travels, and the nature of his contact with significant Shaykhs and members of Shaykh Tijani's family have provided him with the means to illustrates this Order's vital dynamic that remains valid and alive as a legitimate Islamic tradition, today.This book is excellently researched and clearly presented. It is an academic work of notable significance that is also readable and enjoyable. I highly recommend it.
