Review

“A rich and vibrant tapestry.”—The Star-Ledger“A thoroughly readable and often compelling narrative . . . Five centuries have not diminished the appetite for all things Tudor.”—Associated Press“Energetic and comprehensive . . . [a] sweeping history of the gloriously infamous Tudor era . . . Unlike the somewhat ponderous British biographies of the Henrys, Elizabeths, and Boleyns that seem to pop up perennially, The Tudors displays flashy, fresh irreverence [and cuts] to the quick of the action.”—Kirkus Reviews  “[A] cheeky, nuanced, and authoritative perspective . . . brims with enriching background discussions.”—Publishers Weekly  “[A] lively new history.”—Bloomberg

The Tudors is a well written, easy to follow history of the Tudor dynasty. Yet to be honest I would offer a word of caution at this point. This should NOT be the first Tudor history a person reads. The following is the reason why I say that.I had to take several breaks from the book not because of its ponderousness but rather its unremitting grimness. The Kirkus Review states that Meyer “. . .displays some flashy, fresh irreverence. . . [his] aim is to clear out some of the lace and tulle that Hollywood has wound around the Tudors.” I will say that he absolutely met that goal. The problem is the “irreverence” employed was humorless and heavy-handed. The clearing out was done with as much style as using a bulldozer to dig a flower bed. It didn’t take me long to figure out that Meyer has a heavy bias against anything remotely associated with the entire Tudor dynasty. Clearing the air of romantic tales and myths is one thing, closing the shutters, blowing out the candles and piling on the dirt and filth is another. Neither serves the reader well. In the end I can only give a three star rating for this book because of its heavy bias.If you made it this far, you are probably wondering, okay . . .so what should I read? I recommend as a start anything by Alison Weir or Antonia Fraser. They have both written well- received biographies and popular histories of the period.

I don't think that he provides the arc or overarching story of the Tudors as promised. The chapters of the book often appear as they were written as separate articles. I am troubled by his dismissive attitude toward Elizabeth I digesting that her entire reason for being was to survive--more than a few times. I suggest that her motivations were far more complex and purposeful than portrayed in this book. It is fairly well-written and it's citation to known facts is proper and adequate, so I guess we can say the central thesis as to Elizabeth is his own reasonably supported opinion. It sits on my shelf with the many other biographies and histories of that time, but I would read this book and its themes cum grano salis.

If you are looking for a biography about the Tudor monarchs, this is NOT the book. It is very well written and very very interesting, but it is centered around England less than the royal family. It is a history book about England under the Tudor reign. If you are interested in English history such as when Henry VIII broke from Rome, then this is a great book. If you are interested in Henry VII, his son and his six wives, and his grandchildren, then I would not suggest this book

This book is the author's attempt to present the famous Tudor dynasty shown of myth and legend. Accordingly he provides a fresh look at these mostly famous English rulers. Beginning with Henry Tudor, and ending with Elizabeth I. Along the way the author focuses on Henry VIII who was responsible for a brutal legacy that was extremely bloody and left the country bankrupt. Next came Edward VI, was a fervent believer in reforming the English church. A gentler Mary I, is depicted, who tried and failed to reestablish the Catholic Church and produce an heir, while the hugely egotistical Elizabeth I sacrificed everything in order to survive. The Tudors represents a somewhat new presentation of evil, ruthless ambition, ego and selfishness that flourished amid absolute, unchallenged power. The book is very well written and the author gives the reader wonderful context by alternating chapters with the Tudor story and the culture of England at the times. The author has a theme and a mission to debunk the Tudor legends. In this he succeeds.Understand, although very interesting and insightful, this is by no means an unbiased balanced account, which is what I prefer.

Having read G.J. Meyer's book on World War I, I was disappointed with The Tudors. It seemed to focus almost exclusively on the religious aspects of the Tudor monarchs, delving into issues with the church and the persecution of clerics and Catholic and Puritan laypeople while not going into as much detail on economic and foreign policy issues. It also seems to suffer from a lack of objectivity toward both the Tudor monarchs and the early English Church.

I just received this book today but still feel confidant about writing a review because I have the audiobook and have listened to the entire book.I love the way G.J. Meyer structures his books. Specifically, he writes chapters, such as Chapter 1 “The Luck of Henry Tudor” (about Henry VIII), then at the end of the chapter, he writes a “Background” chapter – in this example, the Background chapter is “The Origin of the Tudors.”This structure enables an understandable and uncluttered narrative chapter about Henry VIII without going into the details of how Henry V won the battle of Agincourt in 1422. Those details are given in the Background chapter. This book includes the following: a good, readable map of “The World of the Tudors” – an excellent and understandable “Family Tree” – “A Tudor Timeline” – an “Introduction” – a “Prologue” – 21 colored portraits – “An Epilogue in Two Parts” – clear “Sources and Notes” for each chapter that are actually useful – a good index – “A Reader’s Guide” – and, “Questions and Topics for Discussion”.Bantam Books, trade paperback edition, 2011, 623 pages.I have one other book by G.J. Meyer that follows the same structure – “A World Undone: The Story of the Great War, 1914-1918” – which is the best one-volume work on the WWI that I’ve ever read.Highly recommended! The Tudors: The Complete Story of England's Most Notorious Dynasty

This book is fun! It's oversized format and compilation of interesting historical and cultural photos provides an amazing insight into London over the years, and is perfect for thumbing through or displaying as a beautiful coffee table book. This book is a great addition to anyone's library, especially if they have visited or lived in London. Large and heavy, it's a wonderfully laid out and curated book.

We just received this book. It is a heavy, quality coffee table book. Amazing photographs vintage to new - high quality paper, spine, beautiful cover. This is truly a work of art - we love London and lived there on/off for many years. This book reminds us what an amazing city London is. A terrific, well priced gift for anyone who loves this city. I am going to purchase 2 more for friends who traveled to London for their first time this summer and vow to visit again. A GREAT book on this city!

I loved the pictures, but I didn't realize the size of the book. the book was very small. Though, like I said, I got the book for the pictures.

a very small ' book' not what i wanted for the coffee table

This is one of those books that makes you love to travel and see and experience the world and have someone else deliver the pictures and the history

I saw this book at Pottery Barn and loved it. Probably because the cover was so terrific looking with the bold colors. I put it in our son's room on the shelf with others and it looks fabulous.

Got as a gift and they love it!
