I was lucky enough to get an early copy of this book--and then I ordered it for my sister and will order it for more friends as birthdays come up. It's immersive and entertaining. It reminded me in some ways of Welcome to the Goon Squad, not just stylistically but also in tone. The characters are funny and well drawn. The story is heartbreaking, but Iris--the woman dying--is so fantastic and lacking in self-pity, it makes reading about dying young completely fascinating. Okay, I'm just rambling, but I loved this book. I think everyone should read it.
This book had me laughing out loud in a way that I haven’t done while reading book in… well, I don’t know how long. Mary Adkins’ novel WHEN YOU READ THIS is superb. The characters are so winning that I couldn’t like just one. They were all dueling for my affection.Told as only a modern story can, in poetic emails, texts, and blog posts, which make perfect sense when you read the book. Iris has devastating news that she shares with her boss, Smith, who has also become her friend. She has cancer. And, she has left something important behind. Smith runs a PR agency, and seems to conduct his entire existence virtually – we learn about everything from the status of his business to his emotions through his various email notifications.​Enter Iris’ sister Jade who lays out whatever comes to her mind, as in no filter, and young Carl, Smith’s intern, who is prepared to take the agency to new heights even though he has not been tasked with doing so. Both bring doubled over, tears flowing, can’t stop laughter, to front-page sadness, making this book a perfect blend of fantasticness.
Funny. Sweet. Lovely.My work brings me in contact with many different kinds of loss and all sorts of healthy and unhealthy approaches to grief work. My own losses have taught me much of grief, too.I really appreciated the author’s illustrations of various grief responses and that she infuses much grace into the story.The characters really grew on me and became more likeable than I expected of some.
I loved this modern-day epistolary novel. It grabbed me from the start, as it felt oddly satisfying to delve into the characters' personal lives through their emails, receipts, and texts to one another. Without much time to read, I put down many novels after 1-2 chapters, but this one was so enjoyable that I finished it effortlessly and have recommended it to many friends.
Such great pace and I loved the format! It's as funny as it is heart wrenching. The notion that we can all be accurately assessed by our online presence is powerful and smart. Adkins takes us on a journey that is equal parts love story, workplace dramedy, and old school mystery. A great read for all generations!

Inventive, original, funny, and touching, Adkins delivers a treat.
After the death of his best friend and assistant, Simon is trying to keep his head and his struggling branding firm above water (spoiler alert: hiring a clueless millennial does not help). Desperate to do something good, he wants to follow Iris' last wish by getting her cancer blog published. He hits a snag, though, when her sister, Jade, refuses to release the rights to Iris' story. What starts as a snarky email exchange between Iris' sister and her boss becomes a potential love connection, as the two of them move through grief, in their own way.WHEN YOU READ THIS is a mixed media novel, like Where'd You Go Bernadette or Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society; it is told in the form of emails, online therapy diaries, Iris' old blog posts and drawings (don't buy the Kindle version), etc. It's a sweet story about grief, forgiveness, and letting go, with a romance built in. And I always love a good email novel -- that's not sarcasm, I really do. They feel extra-gossipy, in a good way, and the format allows for some nifty humor and intimacy.My favorite part of the novel, though, was not the romance or the cancer, which felt a little bit generic. Iris' blog entries were a little bit rote; they didn't have the spark that made me feel like I knew her, or wanted her story published. There are SO MANY cancer blogs, and what makes them work (this sounds crass, I'm sorry) is their authenticity. They feel urgent and real and raw and naked, because they are. Iris' story is fictional, and...it feels fictional. It feels like a ploy for tear-jerking and sympathy, and it didn't work.But...I liked the character of Simon, I liked Jade the chef and I LOVED Carl, the millennial assistant who comes in to replace Iris at the branding firm and throws everything into utter chaos. The recurring theme of Carl, in email form, cheerfully telling Simon about something terrible he just did, or offering firm advice on topics he knows nothing about, is hysterical and authentic and so so funny. I would have happily read an entire book just about Simon trying to manage Carl.So. I didn't love the cancer element of the story, but if I think of this as the story of Simon, trying to save his failing firm while managing a perky millennial and find romance with a cynical chef....I liked that story a lot.
