About the Author

A beautiful book, full of personality and bits of history around the drinks included and some tips to change/improve some of them as you go.i've spent about a year or so now reading about the history of cocktails (e.g. "A Proper Drink" and "Imbibe!") as well as through a few cocktail books (Death & Co, of course, as well as Canon and a few others), but i haven't gone nuts and bought a ton of recipe type books for the reason that so many of them are targeted toward other professionals who serve enough drinks to get through all the custom syrups and concoctions demanded (i'm looking at you, Dead Rabbit!) or who have an extensive reach of different bottles of booze on the shelf.Teague's book strikes a nice balance for the duffer like me making cocktails at home, giving me plenty of looks at the classic "Burroughs Drinks" and all the variations and also giving me a new way to use what i have on hand to make something i've not yet come across. For example, the first page i turned to asks me to use SEVEN dashes of Angostura and SEVEN more of Peychaud's to make a Seelbach, and then flipping more i come across the Pumpernickel that once again wants seven dashes of Angostura and is a blessed addition to my life.I'm going to make a lot of drinks in this book and by the end of it I'll have learned a bunch, tried some new bottles and worked some new regulars into rotation.
This is a great book for those interested in learning more about cocktail culture. There are detailed recipes for agave, gin whiskey and brandy based cocktails. There is also a great section on Amari which is very diverse and covers a number of spirits. However, as a rum drinker, I was so disappointed this section carried the tagline, "Yo ho ho here's an entire category I'm glossing over" I was screaming"No! No! Please don't gloss over this category!" The reason I bought this book was to up my rum, cocktail game. Alas, it was not meant to be. There are some great suggestions in the Mixed Libations category where you'll find more great recipes; some including rum. I love the glossary in the back but I was hoping for more recipes incorporating rhum agricole, Jamaican and Spanish style rum cocktails.
You should buy this book. Just buy it. You'll be happy and if you're not I'm sorry, but you're wrong.
This book was delivered to me while I was at work but when I came home, I found the book jammed in my mailbox. I really hate damaging my things, but I just couldn't wait a few more days until I could run into my mailman, so I forcefully removed the book. It took on some slight damage, BUT it's all right! I've gained knowledge from the material and that's what matters most.Sother has a plethora of enjoyable anecdotes and I absolutely love his writing personality. Everything is so comprehensible and approachable. Laughs are to be had in multiple places. The photos are beautiful and captivating. The formatting of recipes and side stories are very well placed.I can go on and on and on, but really, I think every hospitality enthusiast should pick up a copy. You certainly won't regret it.Thank you, Sother, for writing an awesome piece of work. I hope to meet you one day soon and thank you in person.Cheers!
Great addition to my library. Rather than reprinting a laundry list of classics or complex originals that require that require multiple obscure ingredients or steps (and trips to the market), the book presents straightforward recipes organized by the spirit. Common classics showcasing the base spirit are featured, often with suggestions on how to alter or improve upon the original, followed by a series of riffs or original recipes The majority of the ingredients are readily available or easy to source. And some even require fresh juices or citrus.The text is conversational, easily consumed. Opinionated but not offensive. Always educational. Expected nothing less from Mr. Teague
Everything Sother touches turns to gold. He is the man behind the best bar in NYC and crafts well-balanced, nuanced drinks that constantly leave you wanting just onnnne more. Book is fantastic.
Finally! Been waiting for this to arrive for months now and today is the day! Having known Sother as a bartender, coworker, mentor, and friend for most of a decade I can honestly say there will be no disappointment between these covers. Can’t wait to crack this open, with a nice amaro of course.
This was the first book I’ve ever preordered for myself and I’m glad I did. I’ve read a lot of cocktail books and have learned even more from bartenders and bartending myself, but this book has given me a better understanding of spirits and what to do with them. I really enjoy the tone of Sother’s writing and find myself laughing out loud at his whitty commententary. I’m also a big fan of the “Guest Bartender†sections and the beautifully illustrated quotes. I’m excited to share this book with my coworkers, as I believe it will be useful for both new and veteran bar folk, and am even more excited to try out some of these drinks!
