Best book I read in ages. An historical novel, it relies much on the factual history of the early church in Ireland and the rise of the Vikings in Scandinavia, neither of which I knew much about. It is a swashbuckling tale of pirates and priests, Kings and slaves, with epic battles on land and sea, untold riches, love, and secular and religious intrigue. It also deals heavily with the the natures of Islamic and Christian faith. Islam is depicted, on the whole, with respect. Christian faith too is seen as, for the most part, virtuous, although the morality of its earthly leaders is questioned. I found the depiction of the struggles with doubt and anger towards God of the Christian protagonist, Aidan, to be most interesting. Mr. Lawhead is a great story teller.

This was an excellent book and great history lesson, but I almost didn't make it through the beginning. I heard it started slow, but it was more pages of slow beginning than I can hack. If I hadn't heard how good it was from so many people, I would have put it down. The story follows a monk kidnapped by Vikings, teaching about the Viking culture and Byzantium history in a fantastic and fun way. My advice? Read it, but speed read the first 100 pages or so.

I loved this book! It had action, adventure and the thing I loved most was that this book was impossible to predict what was going to happen. A lot of books you can do that with, but not with this one. I was always like, whoa, didn't see that coming! It's a long book, but it held me captive 'til the end. I kept waiting and wondering if he was going to find his faith again and I had no idea how it would end. The ending didn't disappoint. I originally picked this out for my teen boys for homeschool high school literature. They love action and adventure which this has lots of. Both of my boys have advanced reading skills, there's just some heavy scenes, such as graphic violent physical abuse. There's also a scene where he attempts to buy a prostitute's services and lose his virginity, though it doesn't actually occur and it's very brief. Because of those parts, but mainly the graphic images of men being brutally tortured, I'm not going to have my kids read this. Maybe in a few more years. In case you were thinking about this for your teen, I wanted to caution you. Personally I strongly dislike pointless violence, but it had purpose in this book, and since it was such a part of the main character's life it belonged in the book, it was just very well-described. The book is well-written and addicting. I love how you see the character change as the story progresses. The character development is phenomenal! All of the characters are so realistic and you just get sucked into the story. It's one of the best books I've ever read. This author has a gift! I'll be reading his other books now. If you love historical novels that are full of adventure and keep you guessing at every turn, you will love this story and it will not disappoint!

Stephen R. Lawhead's BYZANTIUM is historical fiction. You will not be frightened by lethal aliens, or dazzled by futuristic technology. You get plenty of sword, but no sorcery. Does that sound boring? Well if science fiction relied solely on its aliens and futuristic speculation, it would be boring. Likewise with fantasy and its swords and sorcery. And if BYZANTIUM relied only on its historical realism, it too would be boring.Yet BYZANTIUM is far from boring because it displays a powerful lesson on what is fiction's sine qua non (without which nothing).Story!Story!Story! It is of paramount importance.Around 885 AD, the protagonist Aidan joins with twelve of his brethren monks on a pilgrimage from Ireland to Constantinople (the Greeks called it Byzantium). They have a gift for "Christ's second regent" on Earth, the Holy Emperor. It is a masterpiece of their own making: a Bible of hand-scripted vellum, bound in silver with a jewel-encrusted crucifix. But travel during the Dark Ages is dangerous. Even for warriors. If these monks were not obsessed with faith, they would understand that such a journey is foolish. So before experiencing the splendor of his world's capital, our humble Aidan must experience the nadir of agony. But Lawhead is not a sadist. He does not mire you in endless pages of dark dungeons. Failure is always balanced with victory; twists and turns and surprises abound; the innocent wander into intrigue; and in the end, BYZANTIUM gratifies. Yet if you insist that you NEED aliens and spaceships, or that you NEED at least a little bit of magic, you do yourself injury. BYZANTIUM will fill your needs with story.

This is one of those books where one immediately feels a kinship with the main character - Aiden. Well, Aiden, with a simple, but sincere, though untested faith, goes on a mission to Byzantium with 12 fellow monks. What happens in the next 650 pages is a pilgrimage of faith that makes the ministry of the apostle Paul look like a piece of cake. The lessons Aiden learned can only be understood and appreciated by following his steps and missteps. The conclusion powerfully answers the question so many Christians have asked of God, why?

This is a book you will go back to read many times in your life. I'm on reading three or four. This is my favorite Lawhead book by far. His Robin Hood trilogy is also quite good. This book is a great combination of historical fiction and a redemption story. I look forward to sharing this powerful story with my sons once they're old enough (mid-school) to handle some of the more intense portions of the story.

I first read Byzantium perhaps twelve years ago and did what I seldom do and read it again. It is just as fresh now as then. It is the best book to be written since the advent of the printing press. No other Author can impart the raw emotions and articulate the finest point of theology like Stephen Lawhead. I have desired to meet with him several times over the years but alas my time draws near. May you read this classic tale and feel the inspiration I feel. Though the book is long, it is not tiresome. In fact it has kept me awake several nights, during both readings.

#32,340 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The book is worth having just for the encyclopedic references of flavor matches. The rest of it is a bit long winded, and some down right throw away. There's a definite air of ego, and a lot of references to the authors' other books. We get it, you wrote several... I'd look that up anyway, so I really don't need to read many comments reminding me of the other stuff you've done.

If you love to cook, love to let your imagination come out to play in the kitchen and love experimenting with new foods, this is the book for you. If on the other hand you feel you must rigidly adhere to recipes, this book is still going to be great but not quite as indispensable.I enjoy cooking. Friends will tell you that I am a gourmet chef but the fact is that I really am not. I am a foodie who loves to experiment with flavors and also likes the challenge of replicating foods and flavors that I've had in a restaurant. My palate isn't all that sophisticated though. When it comes to cooking I will look online for ideas, I will look at recipes and perhaps start with something I see and then embellish and experiment as I go along. That's where the flavor bible comes in. If I'm in the kitchen the F Bible is never far from my side. I hosted a small plates party recently. I used a couple of mainstay dishes that I always cook but I wanted to branch out... baked egg rolls, hmmmm what vegetables and seasonings would work well together (I didn't want to go for the obvious soy and ginger) -- I ended up with garlic, cumin and soy as a base. It was delish. My challenge at this small plate feast was that there were people who couldn't handle any level of spice, a person deathly allergic to mushrooms, and a vegetarian. I needed to find substitutions and I did. It was fun figuring out work arounds for everyday flavors and ingredientsThere are obvious pairings (garlic and onion) and there are less obvious and more exotic pairings. These folks have so much knowledge. The book is a treasure trove. A great reference for when you want to go with new pairings or if you just have a question about something you'd like to try. You can't imagine the wealth of information packed into this very portable volume. Figs, hmmm what would go well with figs. Crack the book open to page 161 (its arranged alphabetically) and you will find a list of fig info including ways to use it and cook with it.... and then a list of its complementary foods and flavors In this case the fig pairs with; Almonds, anchovies, anise, apples, arugula, bacon, butter, a few cheeses, cherries, chicken, chococate........ All this and I'm only up to the letter C. It goes all the way through to walnuts.BOTTOM LINE.... Honestly, my review here can't begin to do this book justice. it is well worth double its list price. I've owned my copy almost ten years and I am not sure how I got along without it. You can go online and pretty much find any recipe you desire. But the information in this book just isn't available in any sort of comprehensive way online that I have found. This truly is a flavor bible written by religious food fanatics.... they have left very few stones unturned. Though I see now that they have a vegetarian flavor bible. I might have to check that out as well. If you like to be creative in the kitchen this book is a must. Buy it. Honest. You'll thank me.

Apparently the Kindle edition has been updated since the poor reviews were posted. I decided to take a chance on it and I'm glad I did. In the Table of Contents there is a A-Z index. When you click on that, it opens up an alphabetical list of ingredients. Each one has a link to the page describing the ingredient and things that go well with it. If you're on the fence because if Kindle formatting, go ahead and put that out of your mind.

The book is well made the binding is stitched instead of the more common glued. It is made of good quality paper. It has lots of useful information and seems to be extensive but is lacking. On the surface it seems like useful information but It doesn't really say much. No explanation as to what things are such as, it is a type of spice, herb, grain, fruit, fish and such. No information on substitutions. And most importantly for a book about FLAVOR no explanation as to what things tastes like.I am not a fan of the organization. It's one long list of everything in alphabetical order instead of being categorized. It does not cross reference it self. For anyone that has this book try and put together a dry rub with spices you're not familiar with using only thing book as reference. See if you can differentiate a protein you've never heard of from a grain you've never heard of using only this book. The format is basically the ingredient's name, the season (harvest), taste, (one, possibly two words, such as sweet, nothing else more descriptive), weight ( i think this has something to do with how you feel after eating, but their explanation is some pretentious crap about wine, mind you not what type of wine goes with the ingredient but some other convoluted BS), volume (again some pretentious BS, instead of saying this thing has a delicate or say bold flavor profile they write it is soft or loud.). This is followed by a long list of other ingredients that it goes with. No explanation as to why things go together just that they do. So instead of say, listing things that go together because they have similar flavors then say a sublist of things that contrast each other and still work when paired. It's one long list with no explanation. Not really sure who this book is written for. It is useful because it is extensive but it lacks basic information about ingredients that you may not be familiar with. If the ingredient is something you're familiar with then you know what it taste like and what it goes with, and if not this doesn't really say much out side of what it goes with, minus why they go together.I think this book is intended for the types of cooks that spends more time polishing their pots and knives and admiring how pretty they are then using them. I was looking for a quick reference guide about ingredients and seasonings that I am not familiar including explanations of flavor profiles. I don't know, maybe to include the information that should be part of "The FLAVOR Bible" it would have to be a multi volume set.I mean if I have to go online to find out that oregano has a slightly bitter, pungent flavor. This pungent flavor is composed of earthy/musty, green, hay and minty notes. The spice imparts a slightly astringent mouthfeel. As apposed to what is listed in the this book, weight (medium to heavy) volume (moderate to loud). That is the actual listing for oregano from the book. that is the entire entry, well that and about a page of thing it goes with as a list.

As a dietitian (medically-qualified nutrition expert), I recommend this book to my patients who can afford it. Especially the ones who are trying to cook more at home. A big obstacle to many people not cooking is simply a lack of confidence with ingredients on-hand. This book effectively cures that. Want to eat more asparagus, but don't like the taste of plain? First, join the rest of us. Then, flip to the asparagus listing and match those flavors to what's in your pantry and fridge. There's also a Vegetarian version of this book for those who want to focus on increasing healthful plant foods in their diet.

Review

“This book has one of the most charismatic narrators I've ever met. Seventeen-year-old Cassandra Mortmain captures the castle in her insightful, witty journal entries.” ―Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling “What a lovely book is I Capture the Castle. It's as fresh as if it were written this morning, and as classic as Jane Austen. I'm very happy to have met it.” ―Donald E. Westlake “A delicious, compulsively readable novel about young love and its vicissitudes. What fun!” ―Erica Jong “Dreamy and funny . . . an odd, shimmering timelessness clings to its pages. A thousand and one cheers for its reissue. A+” ―Entertainment Weekly “I Capture the Castle is finally back in print. It should be welcomed with a bouquet of roses and a brass band. Ever since I was handed a tattered copy years ago with the recommendation 'You'll love it,' it has been one of my favorite novels.” ―Susan Isaacs “It is an occasion worth celebrating when a sparkling novel, a work of wit, irony, and feeling is brought back into print after an absence of many years. So uncork the champagne for I Capture the Castle.” ―Los Angeles Times

#97,110 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I knew within a couple of chapters that this would become one of my favorite books. It is so charming, so pretty, and I adored Cassandra for everything she was and everything she wasn't. Her innocence and refreshing admiration of life (of simple things, of nature & people) was so candid & well-expressed that the book had me walking around in a similar mindset every time I put it down. Her father's mysteriousness kept me as interested in him as she was; just as all of the characters wondered, I found myself constantly wondering "Is he genius? Is he crazy? Is he good? Bad?"Every character, for that matter, was complex and multidimensional. There were no stereotypes, no cliches - just complicated, real people who I loved getting to know.I really enjoyed the diary format - there were moments I felt like she stole my own thoughts. She's probably my all-time favorite character actually - so much depth, charisma, and joy.As for the romance, I loved all of it - I enjoyed the interaction between Cassandra & Stephen, how tense & confusing it was. It was so interesting to see how everything played out ... the way, at first, to Cassandra, Simon was just an awkward-looking man in a beard and then, he quickly becomes so much more to the entire family, changing their lives - in a way they had literally sat around hoping for just moments before.Smith's writing is flawless & beautiful. It flows so well. I could envision everything so vividly. It played like a movie in my mind.Be sure to read it! I wish I'd read it years ago

Taking place in the 1930s, I Capture the Castle is the story of Cassandra Mortmain, the daughter of James Mortmain, an author who once wrote an important and celebrated novel. Unfortunately, James has not been able to write for many years, ever since he was sent to prison for three months for knocking down a neighbor after a misunderstanding involving a cake knife. The Mortmain family - James, second wife and artist’s model, Topaz, older daughter and beauty, Rose, Cassandra, son, Thomas, and Stephen, the orphaned son of the family’s deceased maid – live in the crumbled ruins of a castle on which they have stopped paying rent. They have sold all of their possessions and barely have enough money to survive. Then their neighbor dies, leaving the castle and the neighboring estate, Scoatney, to his estranged American grandson, Simon Cotton, who comes to live at Scoatney along with his brother, Neil and his mother. The Cotton family is smitten with the Mortmain family, and nothing will ever be the same for either family. Cassandra’s coming-of-age story is told through the entries in her diaries.I thought this was a beautifully written book. Dodie Smith does a fantastic job of letting Cassandra’s thoughts and feelings flow onto the paper. We see Cassandra’s growth throughout the book as she progresses through the six-penny journal to the shilling journal and finally to the two-guinea journal as she records her thoughts. We share her hopes and dreams, and happy and sad memories as she tries to navigate growing up in a family struggling to survive, yet endeavoring to live a normal life. Cassandra seems to be the practical one of the family as she tries to help her father write again, schemes with Rose to find a husband, and struggles with Stephen’s feelings for her, as well as her growing feelings for another. It is both a humorous and poignant portrayal of a young girl finding her way in the world, as she also helps and cares for those around her. The novel also examines the English class system and compares English versus American traditions.

I am 60 years old, yet this book plunges me into youth so vividly, I can hardly bear it. It is British through and through. The ancient castle is the only setting it could have, and Cassandra its best narrator. The sections are divided by the narrator's collection of journals, along with their cost, a significant factor. It is long, full of puzzling, eccentric characters and then some so clear and lifelike that I believed the author must have known them intimately. I never wanted this book to end. I only wish I'd found it earlier in my life so I could savor it at many ages.

This is certainly a period piece, set in the 1930's, so while it's somewhat old fashioned in its feel, the writing is some of the most evocative I've read. It's not action packed by any means, and it's entirely first person, but it reads quickly and I found it very enjoyable. I appreciated that some elements if found in another book would have had predictable outcomes, while here they are not entirely predictable yet also manage to avoid the trap of implausible twists. The story is entirely set in England but it's also got a few American characters. That adds an additional element of interest for American readers with English ties, or vice versa. There is one stretch that's a bit melodramatic (meloromatic?) for my taste, but it's an important element that ultimately works well. If you find yourself struggling to maintain interest through that section just push through and know that it's not interminable.I find myself reading many more novels by male authors than female, but I found this female voice, both the author's and the protagonist's, to be a refreshing change of pace. I'm not saying this is a 5-star read, but I do think it is very good.

The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History, by Robert M. Edsel Bret Witter

From Publishers Weekly

WWII was the most destructive war in history and caused the greatest dislocation of cultural artifacts. Hundreds of thousands of items remain missing. The main burden fell to a few hundred men and women, curators and archivists, artists and art historians from 13 nations. Their task was to save and preserve what they could of Europe's great art, and they were called the Monuments Men. (Coincidentally or not, this book appears only briefly after Ilaria Dagnini Brey's The Venus Fixers: The Untold Story of the Allied Soldiers Who Saved Italy's Art During World War II, Reviews, June 1.) Edsel has presented their achievements in documentaries and photographs. He and Witter (coauthor of the bestselling Dewey) are no less successful here. Focusing on the organization's role in northwest Europe, they describe the Monuments Men from their initial mission to limit combat damage to structures and artifacts to their changed focus of locating missing items. Most had been stolen by the Nazis. In southern Germany alone, over a thousand caches emerged, containing everything from church bells to insect collections. The story is both engaging and inspiring. In the midst of a total war, armies systematically sought to mitigate cultural loss. (Sept. 3) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

About the Author

Robert Edsel began his career in the oil and gas exploration business. In 1996 he moved to Europe to pursue his interests in the arts. Settling in Florence seeing some of the great works, he wondered how all of the monuments and art treasures survived the devastation of World War II. During the ensuing years, he devoted himself to finding the answer. In the process, he commissioned major research that has resulted in this book. Robert also coproduced the related documentary film, The Rape of Europa, and wrote Rescuing Da Vinci, a photographic history of an art heist of epic proportions and the Allied rescue effort. The author lives in Dallas. Bret Witter cowrote the bestseller Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World (Grand Central, 2008). He lives in Louisville, KY.

It's fairly well known that in the late Thirties and Forties, the Nazis stole several fortunes' worth of artworks and other value-laden loot from individual Jewish citizens, French and other museums, even national treasuries in the form of gold ingots and coins. Only a few books had been written on the subject of how all this was reclaimed, and by whom, but 2010's MONUMENT MEN has proved the most wide-reaching and popular of all. This book even spawned a Hollywood movie, a (too-jocular) vehicle for George Clooney.Never mind the movie, THE MONUMENTS MEN is a wonderful achievement, blending the military history of the Allies' struggle to liberate Western Europe with the artistic history of what was hidden away in secret tunnels and caves throughout Germany and Austria, and the life stories of the men tasked with reclaiming so many of Western Europe's most enduring cultural treasures. It was a difficult effort to document and celebrate the mostly American Army soldiers who, at great cost to their personal safety, located and rescued this booty and began the process of repatriation, but author Robert M. Edsel does a fine job. In the beginning the cadre of "Monuments Men" (officially MFAA for monuments, fine art and archives) faced a painful lack of recognition, which to the military mind meant they barely existed and did not qualified for funding or transportation. On the ground, these career museum curators, restoration artists and university teachers sought to get into Germany during the "void" period between the retreat of the withering Third Reich and the occupation and imposition of order by Allied troops. (In point of fact, they sometimes found themselves in German villages ahead of the liberators!) The best teams seem to be those who combined the meticulous talents of restorationists like George Stout with the impatient, get-it-done approach of cultural experts like Lincoln Kerstein.Robert M. Edsel deserves congratulations for crafting this well-researched and highly readable text, and achieving the elusive goal of a book that combines "page-turner" quality with so much vital information. In my opinion everyone should read MONUMENTS MEN, especially those with an interest in modern European history, the story of World War Two, or the sufferings of Jews under the Holocaust. Another very good book along the same lines, but more limited in scope, is 2015's THE LADY IN GOLD by Anne-Marie O'Connor. Many thanks to the Amazon discussion-board member who sent me my copy for Christmas.

The big note to start this review is that if you watched the movie, fine—it was entertaining and you gotta love the actors. However, if you want the real scoop on the real Monuments Men, you must read the book. I’m not sure why Hollywood (does most of what it does) decided to change the characters or make light of the contributions put forth by Rose Valland by intimating her having a crush on Matt Damon’s character. The Monuments Men were courageous and enterprising, pushing to be in active war zones in their pursuit of art of every kind. They worked closely with residents and a broad array of military personnel. Where the bigwigs so often took the credit—shock—these were the men behind the scenes doing their job and saving millions of pieces of art from the destruction of Hitler’s madness. The book follows the team from their inception to the close of their work. The author, Robert M. Edsel, did a brilliant job solidly taking us along the path of the battles while not losing sight of the point of the story. You may find yourself doing what I did throughout the book—gasping in horror as more and more of what Hitler was doing comes to light. I knew about his confiscation of artwork from everyone, everywhere, and yet I was astounded to find out even more of his evil egomaniacal ways. There are descriptions of the men—and Rose—that I noted along the way, James Rorimer, “He had no practice in failure, and he had no intention of starting now.” Ms. Valland, “Destiny is not one push, she thought as she waited to cross a quiet street on that cold Paris evening years later, but a thousand small moments that through insight and hard work you line up in the right direction, like a magnet does with metal shavings.” You’ll enjoy reading about Harry Ettlinger’s journey with the Monuments Men. A German Jew with American citizenship, he served bravely along with the others. George Stout, “’The sun is fine and, after the rat race, I begin to remember that I am myself and not merely a set of functions.’” Having been blessed with the experience of standing in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam—a haven of art—reading that paintings were taken from there made me sad and appreciate at all that was saved. It took them six years for the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives to return what they’d found to the proper owners. This book reads like an adventure story and will keep you interested the entire way through. If you like history and heroes, read this book, don’t just watch the movie.
