From the Back Cover

Failure is the most fundamental feature ofbiological, social and economic systems. Just as species fail--and become extinct--so do companies, brands and public policies. And while failure may be hard to handle, understanding the pervasive nature of failure in the world of human societies and economies is essential for those looking to succeed. Linking economic models with models of biological evolution, Why Most Things Fail identifies the subtle patterns that comprise the apparent disorder of failure and analyzes why failure arises. Throughout the book, author Paul Ormerod exposes the flaws in some of today's most basic economic assumptions, and examines how professionals in both business and government can help their organizations survive and thrive in a world that has become too complex. Along the way, Ormerod discusses how the Iron Law of Failure applies to business and government, and reveals how you can achieve optimal social and economic outcomes by properly adapting to a world characterized by constant change, evolution and disequilibrium. Filled with in-depth insight, expert advice and illustrative examples, Why Most Things Fail will show you why failure is so common and what you can do to become one of the few who succeed.

It's hard to get the answer to "Why Most Things Fail." The book goes deep into mathematical formulas. Admittedly, I don't bring to this reading a background in math or economics. So, most of this exploration lost me. However, since I was still looking for the answer as to WHY most things fail I did look for the conclusions and links. Even if I were able to resolve Nash equilibria and the like, there was no correlation to the supposed narrative exploration that I could see. This does not mean that there is no value to this book. What Ormerod does posit is that there are immutable Power Laws affecting all matter - species, ideologies and businesses alike. All things fail. That alone is a powerful reframing. Existence of anything could probably be more successfully extended when strategies are anchored to this position. In one small paragraph toward the end, Ormerod does state rather succinctly the reason why things fail. It is that we as humans are limited in our ability to understand dynamic and complex environments. While we certainly can't grasp everything, there are more correlations perhaps worthy of another study. Our understanding has increased over the millennia in direct correlation to the length and quality of our existence. That is why the pursuit of information and insights, even if they are difficult to follow as they are in this book,is worthwhile.

A great read - a little dry in parts - I'd forgotten how dry economics can be - last studied them (in school) in the late 1970s!!!!Still can't get beyond the "equilibria" notion - in the real world "all other things are NEVER equal" - plus humans do not make rational choices.Seems like economists would have figured that out by now - it's not like hyperbolic discounting is a new theory.

It`s an excellent book about extinction, mainly companies` extinction, with serious critics to many economic models. Even though criticism of economical models is not new and can be found in many books, it shows the limits of each approach and why these simplifications can have impacts on planning. It`s not a book for those who are not interested in a in-depht and serious reading about the subject. I`d recommend it to economists and value investors that are interested about why even large companies usually have a so limited longevity, since their life cycle is not so bounded as it is for a living being and how extinctions happens. Is it causes by competition among companies at the same industry? Is it caused by external causes, like general economic crisis? Or maybe is it caused by both?Paul Ormerod has a serious approach to this problem and shows it in an accessible way for those who have any background on economics. I recommend it for anyone interested on the subject.

Ormerod seems to be adressing his book to public managers or business managers. In my opinion, he delves too deeply into economic analyses that are not necessary for the ultimately simple and straightforward conclusions that he arrives at. Instead, the economic analysis seems to be intended more to prove a point to the vast majority of economic experts that he berates and disagrees with. The chapters are disjointed and at times it can be difficult to tell what point the author is trying to make. From the attitude that the author displays in the book, I'm sure he would discount my review, claiming that I'm too simple-minded to follow his logic. So be it. I didn't like this book at all.

I bought this book hoping for insight into "why most things fail." What I got was a rambling argument grounded primarily on the similarity of the frequency distributions of business failure and biological failures (extinctions). Frankly, the relationship hardly strikes me as logically necessary, and the relation could well be spurious (or coincidental). But I'm no PhD and didn't give it a lot of thought, so I could well be wrong. What I am certain of is that the book offered little else, no corrolaries, certainly no explanation of the reasons "why most things fail," and no other practical insights or knowledge.Bottom line, wait for the book's appearance in the discount bin before buying.

This book is written at the seventh grade level and is consistently vapid. There are intriguing ideas--the similarities of rates of extinction and failures of businesses, but there's no real attempt to explain these similarities beyond telling us that the relevant curves obey a power law. We already knew that lots of businesses fail and that it's hard even for giant companies to keep up, but there's nothing added here that explains any of this.If you want exciting pop economics, read Steven Landsburg.

I have two perspectives for the review of Mr. Ormerod's fine book. First - if you are new to this subject, the book is interesting throughout as it helps explain, or at least builds a framework to hang our hats own about why some things seem to succeed and others fail. There are multitudes of examples from the pet rock (succeed), to the Edsel (a considered failure).Second - if you are familiar with the subject of extinction theory and dynamic systems, the book starts out slow, but really hits its stride in Chapter 8 "Doves & Hawks" (and forward) as we start to get into examples of dynamic theory and extinction theory/data. In Chapter 10 "The Powers That Be" we learn that systems in which the connections are not random but follow a power law have completely different properties than ones that do, since it is the structure of the connections between the component parts (i.e. agents) which gives systems their distinctive and characteristic features. No, don't be afraid, as this is not a technical book as I make it out to be as all the examples are easy to read and comprehend. If you are interested in this subject, other fine books to review are Ubiquity by Mark Buchanan, The Black Swan by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, or Deep Simplicity by John Gribbin.

I have been away from my studies for the last five years and this is a required text for my next semester. Since I have been away from the "scene" as they say I felt that even after 2 years of study and more years of practice that I would just brush up my knowledge before walking into the class/labs again. I have not finished this book yet but have gotten a good idea on the text and writings thus far. This is a very captive read despite it being more electrical basics and chemistry it does keep your attention. Not many textbooks can say that especially on something that you would rather just be elbows deep in some engine instead of memorizing terms etc. However, I have been pleasantly surprised and have actually learned HISTORY of hybrids in this text. Most people just think they've been a concept of the last 20-30 years but it actually goes back to the mid-1800's. I hope that the technology will be perfected in future and be made readily and affordable in the near future. I am excited for this course and happy I have a textbook that keeps my focus.

This was required text for a hybrid/fuel cell class I recently took at a local community college's alternative fuel technology program. For the most part it clearly explained the systems, components, hardware and software that are integrated in hybrid/electric and fuel cell vehicles. The only drawback to this book is that the technology is advancing very rapidly so this book is obsolete in some chapters, I suspect that future editions will be significantly updated. It does cover the basics very well and provides a strong starting point for students interested in alternative fuel technology.

It looks like the printer was running out of ink during printing. The first 20 pages and the last 20 pages are VERY light. For $111 dollars some one should ha QC the book. Very disappointed

It's a book. I ready it. End of story.

Book looked used, cover was bent and binding edge was slightly torn but no missing pages and was cheap for price

Most probably the best textbook on hybrid, electric and fuel-cell vehicles currently available.Excellent service, excellent book.Eduardo Roma Burgos.

I am impressed with this book. It walks you through the basics of the technology and market.I felt a little like being at school when doing the tests at the end of each chapter.....but it does make you re-read the part you didnt really understand.

Excellent

Great book. very creative story line, fabulous character development, new characters enrich the story. Angst and excitement galore as well as enough intrigue to have you chewing at your fingernails. our favorite villains don't disappoint tho Wickham has only a minor role; Lady Catherine is irascible as ever and then some, Ms Bingley is a real piece of work but is NOTHING compared to the real villain in this story. Absolutely love Lord Paisley and something tells me there is much more to him than meets the eye and I hope Ms James has another story in the works with his character in it. His character reminds me of the Scarlet Pimpernel (tho he is single). I could go on and on about this book but you just have to read it for yourself. My ONLY criticism is that it seems like a voice translator program was used, as the words that are wrong do not seem to be typing mistakes (for example, 'state' instead of 'estate', 'in his cuffs' instead of 'in his cups', sometimes but not always 'Georgina' instead of 'Georginana'), but those mistakes never really caused a problem understanding what was going on, they were just little annoyances, and certainly not worth lowering my score. Thoroughly enjoyed having such a lengthy book to disappear into for a few days. There are some things not quite fully wrapped up, which leads me to believe there will be more coming. Cannot wait for the next one!

I honestly squealed like a five year old when this title popped up on Amazon. I have devoured this series of novels on FF and remember wishing that they were available in print. Thank you, Paisley, for formally publishing! I can't wait to see the others -- they are truly some of my favorite JAFF titles out there. The characters are true to Austen yet the story deviates significantly from Pride & Prejudice -- such a marvelous jaunt!And... LORD PAISLEY! Love him. He's right next to Lord Dyfed Brougham as favorite P&P supporting character of all time. But, truly -- the characters are delightful, except for the pack that happens to be delightfully villainous -- whatever the case, they're all masterfully done. Thank you, thank you -- you made May a lovely month.

Absolutely loved this book. Novel variation that kept true to personality profiles.. maybe a little soft at the end for Lady C but at least how I would like to think of her. Read this as a KU, then purchased so can reread. While I read a lot of P&P variations I rarely read one more than once.Outstanding story with good editing. There were a couple of misused words (waste/waist extenuate/accentuate) that make me crazy), a few personal pronoun mixups, and a very few dropped caps considering the length of the story I give editing an A-Highly recommend! Only warning make sure you have some free time available or you will be losing sleep.

I love this book and am thrilled to see it published. I read it twice on fanfics so this is the third time around and I still enjoyed catching details that didn't standout before. The new characters are well developed and the author leaves us excited to learn more about them. I'm looking forward to being able to buy the next ones and hope the author continues to keep writing even if it's a whole new story. Kudos Paisly!

I was very intrigued by the premise and how the story began. There was mystery and danger and plenty of Darcy and Lizzy angst. But I should’ve foreseen a problem when the book was barely a quarter of the way through and a bunch of exciting things happened already. And the story is over 700 pages. I knew the story would now drag, and I hoped it wouldn’t.Once the initial drama has been dealt with, what you get for 75% of the story (if not more) is 1% angst between Lizzy and Darcy (who, through extenuating circumstances and the trials they faced, have come to a quick understanding) and a lot of kissing and I love you and blah blah blah. Normally I’m okay with little angst, but that became the bulk of the story as we waited for the wedding to finally take place. It was so over saturated I became very bored. And while their banter was funny to read, I quickly bored of it as well. There was finally some action towards the end, but like the beginning of the story, it was more of a spurt. And then there’s the epilogue. I’ll get to that...What saved this story for me were the other characters, especially Julian, aka Lord Paisley, a marquess and good friend of Darcy’s. He was my favorite character in the story. So witty, so full of life, he made this story worth the read. Which made the way the story went down much more upsetting.I will be including slight spoilers below...Throughout the course of the story, it is clear Julian develops tender feelings for the very young Georgiana Darcy. We saw some nice interactions between them, but that's it. We were given some inkling as to there being a reason for him pretending to be a dandy, but that was never explained. I was sincerely hoping for a nice epilogue in which we’d get more from our secondary characters. But nope. What we got is pages of Darcy and Lizzy still in love, still desiring each other, still this still that with mention to no one else except Jane and Bingley. I found myself skimming through the epilogue as I was very disappointed. The storyline with the Sandry family was interesting and, turns out, tragic. It’s actually pretty dark what we discover. But with 700 pages of story, I felt the reader deserved more of that and less of the passionate kisses and “I love you Elizabeth” etc etc. Finally, two surprises that came out of this story, one pleasant, one not so much. I was pleasantly surprised at Lady Catherine. In essentials, she remained much the same. But she became a character I enjoyed and rooted for towards the end, which was nice.Less than pleasant was Darcy. Yes, I know...sacrilege. But because of the way the love and passion was overdone and the fact that it was pages and pages of the same thing, it became quicker to notice just how annoying Darcy was characterized here. In the beginning I loved his heroic self and his selflessness when it came to protecting Lizzy. But in the latter half, his possessiveness and controlling nature were much too much. The perfect example is the way he wouldn’t allow anyone but him (especially male relatives) to address Lizzy informally. Seriously? That was dumb in my opinion.Would I read this story again? Maybe. But I’d skip through a lot of it if I read it again. Perhaps the story would’ve been much more enjoyable if we lost a lot of it. Then, it would’ve been easier to deal with all the mushy love scenes.

If you loved a lot of angst as I do,  this P&R Variation is for you. This story has it all from fraud, attempt murdered, murdered to incensed. In mist of this all there is a beautiful love story. The characters of Elizabeth and Darcy are well developed, especial Elizabeth. There are several new characters who provided comic relief in mist of this thriller. The writing is fair however there some misused words but it's doesn't take away from the story.

I really liked the storyline. Usually, long P&P variations are often tedious. This one is not. There is non stop action through all 700 pages. The author introduces a new character, but he adds to the story.
