The author stretches across a large spectrum of human traits and flaws in evolution's "best efforts" incremental approach. Ranging from "why do young women prefer men who take risks" to the outsized number of head colds that human have compared to animals, the book was chuck full of delightful ideas. I hadn't really considered how many tradeoffs there are in evolution (nothing comes without a cost) and how difficult it is for nature to make fundamental (versus incremental) changes. Relatively easy to lose a little hair so we can cool ourselves and run down exhausted prey. No so much to get rid of unneeded bones. If something is just there but not taking up resources, evolution often just leaves it alone, so we carry a lot of baggage from previous forms. We also have mental traits that served us once but are dysfunctional now. I'm going to look for more stuff from this guy. He can write a good thriller, even if it is mostly fact based science. He gets more philosophic as the book progresses .... many interesting possibilities for our species.

It was a fun book! And it was just what I expected. I was raised in a sort fundamentalist setting, so I deeply enjoy the freedom of mind flight. The accumulated errors every single species packs around in its DNA is probably as certain a proof as can ever be imagined in support of our evolutionary past. Lents has created a handy little reference book documenting such errors. Well written. Thanks

I bet you have often asked yourself, "What is wrong with people?"Well, now you can find out. This book is a well written, scientific account of many types of flaws in human beings: physical, genetic, reproductive, behavioral.I thought this book was going to make me sad, and I would quickly need to read a book on how great human bodies are, to make up for it. But, that wasn't the case. I actually finished the book feeling optimistic. Yes, we all need to be grateful that we made it through odds stacked against us, and we became functioning individuals (the reproductive section was a little scary). But, the book was largely a testament to how humans can triumph over adversity, how we can do more than make do with limitations, but we can also thrive. And, we are now developing technology that could even fix some of our flaws. For example, the large portion of our genome that is junk DNA (copied for generations, but serving no purpose) seems like a blank canvas to make improvements. Maybe we could have wings without giving up our arms? I am kidding about the wings, but it seems like we could at least reactivate our damaged GULO gene and make our own Vitamin C. That, and other improvements, could be what makes long distance space travel feasible for our descendants.Another point that runs through the book, but is not stated often enough is this: We all have our strengths and weaknesses (physical, mental, behavioral). There are not good people. There are not bad people. We are ALL sometimes good and sometimes bad. If we could all internalize this point, I think we would be less arrogant about ourselves and less judgmental of others.

I am still reading this book. Some of it is interesting and informative, some of it simplifies biology, a reader has to believe in evolution to accept it all, and some things I just cannot agree that it is a design flaw. But, what do I know? I am still thinking it is better to have all those bones in the ankle .

Very enjoyable read. Humorous and informative. Definitely not a text book. If you’re looking for scientific details, this is not the book for you. If you’re looking for higher-level info, this works. I found myself laughing at times, also found myself doing my best Spock imitation by saying, “interesting” a number of times.

Some claim that humans are perfect by design; it isn't so. Written for the lay reader, this book thoroughly debunks notions of perfection and innate superiority. Cephalopods have much better eye-design, and humans get way too many colds. For good or ill, we share many issues with all vertebrate critters. Read this and understand the why and wherefore of many of our ills, and at least an equal number of hereditary adaptations that make life better. The writing style is engaging and entertaining while being instructive and chock-full of facts.

We humans should become less arrogant and less confident about what we believe is right or wrong. We are just a carrier of ATGC configurations. If we understand and accept our fragility, our life should not be so hard any more. We are only a random combination of genes. We have nothing to be proud of, or to feel special about ourselves.Because we are not special, we may be able to live casually. We don't have to accomplish anything. Being born to the world and being alive for a while itself justify the meaning of our existence. We have lived as long as the universe, and so did everything else. Buddha said if you reach enlightenment you would overcome the boundary of life and death. I am not special and I don't have to try hard to be special. I can just follow the flow of my mind and the great nature,, and have a nice dream before I rest forever. The universe should also be flawed as much as I am flawed. Being flawed and fragile is a universal principle. The people who believe themselves flawless is a fool. Any belief, even God cannot be perfect. It is comforting to know that everybody is essentially very fragile. I don't have to try hard to become perfect. We, the human beings are nothing. I just need to dream a very nice dream. This book is good because it lets us know that we are okay to be wrong. Actually we cannot be right or wrong as much as an ant cannot be right or wrong.

A fun, informative scientifically based book. The way the author breaks down our anatomical faults, vestigial uselessness, strengths, and weaknesses destroys any serious notion that we are products of an intelligent designer -- be it alien or divine. Highly recommend.
