Not useful at all.

The best book of this subject hands down. I got interest in error coins by reading the authors book on errors. I also wanted to know about dollar errors but nothing existed that provided a simple step by step approach. This book makes but it so easy and provides great pictures. I have found several dollar bills worth over $100 and I am so excited about making some extra money with this system.

For 4 years, I have used this book in teaching and working with masterâ€™s and PhD students and professors on publishing in English in international scholarly journals, along with several style guides and other materials. This is in a country where this activity is relatively new, the scholarly traditions are very different, and the style of the language makes translation not very successful. The book is both detailed and clear enough for those with at least an intermediate level of English, and it has given many of my students and colleagues the support and confidence needed to organize their content effectively and go ahead and write in English from the earliest stage. They especially appreciate part two on the sections of a paper, to put it mildly. Everything is addressed from the perspective of people who need to write in English who are not native speakers of it, which is unique and invaluable, although Iâ€™m quite sure that many of us native speakers could benefit by it too. Iâ€™m looking forward to working with the second edition in the coming academic year. My only caveat in regard to the second edition is that the discussion of the publishing process itself is brief, because the focus of the book is on English; people concerned with the whole process and the publishability of the actual content (choice of journal, avoiding predatory sources in research and publishing, international ethical guidelines for authors, getting to peer review, etc.) need to consult additional sources and also to consult style guidelines (APA, Chicago Manual of Style, and others) if required by a journal. Cheers to Mr. Wallwork for all his work in this and the other books in the series to help people get their voices heard.

â€œEnglish for Writing Research Papersâ€ took me back through the journey of trying to learn to write my own papers in English, a journey that is still ongoing. As a young Ph.D. student, I made almost every mistake the author exemplified in his book. I am now able to write my own papers, but most of my learning has been on the job. I wish I had come across this book 15 years ago! It would certainly have made my learning, and the job of my advisor, a lot easier.I particularly like chapters 3-7, where Adrian touches on a number of issues that seem to escape providers of professional editing services, as well as well-intentioned, yet busy native speakers who try to edit poorly written papers. Chapter 3 explains why we should break up long sentences, and offers many examples on how to do it; chapter 4 offers tips on how to structure a paragraph to highlight a message; chapter 5, by far my favorite, counsels the writer to prune his/her text for the sake of clarity, conciseness, and above all, mercy for the reader; chapter 6 teaches how to avoid ambiguity and vagueness, and chapter 7, very much needed in the world of academic writing, is a lesson on how to make clear who did what when reviewing the literature, and comparing oneâ€™s own results with the results of others.The book also discusses some cultural differences affecting science writing. I can totally relate to them. In my country of origin, for example, verbose texts with long and complicated sentences and unusual words are the norm in scientific papers. This style of writing is proof that the scientist is sophisticated and erudite. Now that many Brazilian researchers have started seeking wider recognition by publishing in international journals, this aspect of our culture has become a real barrier to publication. Some of my colleagues have wasted considerable money paying English editors just to end up having their papers rejected despite the fact that the grammar and spelling in their texts had been corrected.In my own work as a subject editor and reviewer in my field, I have encountered considerable resistance from peers whose first language is not English. This is particularly true when I suggest that they modify the structure of their texts by cutting, pruning, clarifying and using words that are more common in their fields. I have been doing this intuitively, but after reading Adrianâ€™s book, I have found much needed reassurance. I now have something to consult when I am in doubt, and I can refer the book to my peers when they offer resistance to my suggestions.I recommend this book not only to those who want to write their papers in English, but also to anyone who has the role of editing, evaluating, or reviewing papers written by non-native speakers.

I'm currently studying a final year paper in Research writing and this text has been a fantastic supplement to the material in the paper I'm in. Wallwork covers all the key points and more. The book was a great buy the only negative comment I could make is just a suggestion is to see more examples of advanced language which would be needed or could be used to create a more academic sounding and flowing report papers. I've already purchased more of Wallworks works and I look forward to seeing more fantastic knowledge and examples from those texts when I get the chance to read them.

I picked this up as required reading for a Ph.D level research methods course. I loved it so much I kept it. It had wonderful advice for writing practices and I wish I had come across it earlier in my academic career!

Judy conducted the large majority of the interviews for this project. Judy is active in community service where she serves on several non-profit boards including the American Lung Association, the Nashville Opera, and most notably, the board of Alive Hospice.

The author shares moving, meaningful stories he heard from several hospice patients who can help us all understand more about what is truly important in life. Amazing testimonies and a very worthwhile read!

Since I work for a Hospice, I found the reflections in this book help me understand these same reactions in my patients.

Malone is taken under the wing of Sutherland, a seasoned "queen" who watches over him and cares for him as a best friend. At first, Malone romanticizes the idea of falling in love, but soon becomes jaded, realizing that this is nothing more than a hopeful delusion, and resigning himself to a life of shallow hedonism.Life for Malone and Sutherland is one big party, filled with sex and drugs and dancing. I first saw "Dancer from the Dance" at a bookstore in a mall in Modesto California, an agricultural town in the heart of California's big valley. The cover had a blonde man wearing jeans, and a smile; he was shirtless. I remember being nervous, yet excited by the prospect that this might actually be about gay people; I was 21 years old, and there were few if any gay men I wanted to emulate, it was 1979. I was searching for my people, a way of life, a path to take: I realized that I wasn't alone. I was a bit self-conscious at my boldness as I placed the book on the counter, but the cashier was nonplussed. As I read, I entered a world that was completely foreign to me, and although I didn't aspire to be any of the characters in the novel, I wanted a life vastly different than the one I had, and I was shown that I had not only options but 'family' waiting for me. I have read 'Dancer' so many times that I have lost count. I would purchase the book and then give it to others to read. Holleran's prose is astonishingly gorgeous; perhaps the best in American writing. He has an eye for detail, an open heart and a wit to match his writing talent; NOBODY writes better: they may write differently but not better. His prose is hypnotic, and one is held prisoner by it so much so that it haunts the reader, even after one puts the book down. He recites a tale, and through his descriptive expertise, we are able to feel it, imagine it, acquiesce to it, and live it right along with him; "Dancer" is a living, breathing work; age only makes it better. It is graphic, it is unsparing, it is timeless: Dancers leave the floor, but new ones appear and this still goes on long after the 70's, long after the initial horrors of A.I.D.S., long after a fashion from that time has gone, replaced by something trendy. What isn't trendy is the human heart, and the need to love and be loved in return; desire, passion, longing, disappointment, inadequacy, and spirit still define humanity. In "Dancer", Andrew takes us to New York City in the 1970's, and we are able to feel it's pulse, and smell it's garbage and be exhilarated by the dreams and ambitions of the people who populated it then, and do so now. I have read all his books, many of his essays and adore his short stories, as well; I just checked out "Nights in Aruba" today at the library, to read again. Andrew is my favorite writer and after spending so many decades with him, rereading his work feels like a visit with a dear friend.

This is a wonderful book - a powerful, moving, and insightful take on gay male life in a big, party-loving city a couple of decades ago. Not an author I knew of, but I'm glad I discovered him. I'm neither gay nor male, but I spent some of my early and mid-twenties doing a lot of clubbing and partying... And this book very eloquently captures both the glamour and appeal, and the hollow desperation and frenzy, of those endless nights. Beautifully written.

I have had to keep in mind that it was written more than 50 years ago, because some of the cultural aspects are disturbing to someone from 2016--the native people are definitely 2nd class and taken advantage of, but that is the reality of history. There is nothing about interpersonal conflicts within the group, but lots of battling the elements, and rather nasty frostbite operations.

March 7, 2013Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI love true adventure stories. Annapurna is a true adventure story of a French 1950 mountain climbing expedition. Two of their members are the first to reach the summit of a 8000M peak. Unheard of, many thought it could not be done. Annapurna is the epic book that influenced ED Vestures when he was a boy toward his mountain climbing greatness ( climbed all 13 8000M peaks with no supplemental oxygen...all his books 5 star see my reviews).Annapurna is 278 pages of great adventure and lots of action. No boring parts. I read it in 3 days.Here's a tidbit of the book to wet your appetite.A group of some of the greatest mountain climbers is assembled with a great doctor/surgeon Oudot, and support people for the expedition. Local loyal helpers/guides called Sherpas and Coolies to help carry the heavy loads are hired. The leaders Sahibs have as their expedition leader Maurice Herzog. Herzog is seen as brave but sensibly cautious and uses lots of scouting of different routes. A higher mountain was originally thought OK to climb but it is found too dangerous at this time. Scouting more through glaciers around impassable ridges , a hidden valley a route to Annapurna is found. Already they are experiencing bad weather and are in a race with time as Monsoon rains are coming soon. Some routes are found to be no good. Lots of dangers, crevasses, and avalanches. Five ascending camps are set up. The expedition is rapidly breaking down due to health problems.Herzog and Louise Lachenal make it to the top. All expedition members helped and team work was great. A lot of unselfish people. However Herzog loses his gloves and develops frostbite of the fingers and toes. Lachenal has frostbite of the toes and heal. Some of the others have snow blindness and injuries. The expedition physically is a mess They must hurry to a lower camp for the doctor Oudot to try to save them. Gangrene has set in. Toes and fingers must be amputated.There is a great chapter of the expedition's passage from Nepal to India and meeting the Maharajah in his palace.I won't say too much more and ruin the book for you.Anyone loving true adventure stories and human endurance against incredible obstacles will love this book. This book was the one that many great climbers got their inspiration from. 5 stars and proudly added to our family library.

Ed told me, during our climb, this was the book that inspired him to dedicate his life to mountaineering and becoming the first American to summit all 14 of the 8,000K summits in the world without supplemental oxygen. Being a novice mountaineer myself, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I found the book to be well written and extremely thoughtful. Today, when most mountaineering books are written as "tell-all" accounts of an expedition, I found this book to be refreshing because it was more about the experience of conquering the mountain than it was about airing dirty laundry about the participants. This particular climb still amazes me, because this team of explorers summited Annapurna (an extremely difficult and demanding mountain) on their first attempt. This book is about courage, determination, perseverance and dedication. This is a must read if you are the least bit interested in mountaineering.

One would laugh at the primitive equipment, the false maps, and the disappearing mountains if the stakes hadn't been so high (life or death). Eventually the French team finds Annapurna, but the weather threatens to end the attempt. A thrilling account.

Without fanfare he relates a most amazing story of truly dedicated, tough mountaineers. This is not for the reader that leans toward soap opera but for one that values looking into lives that displayed unadorned courage.

Very well written, lots of adventure. I have had to keep in mind that it was written more than 50 years ago, because some of the cultural aspects are disturbing to someone from 2016--the native people are definitely 2nd class and taken advantage of, but that is the reality of history. There is nothing about interpersonal conflicts within the group, but lots of battling the elements, and rather nasty frostbite operations.

I love true adventure stories. Annapurna is a true adventure story of a French 1950 mountain climbing expedition. Two of their members are the first to reach the summit of a 8000M peak. Unheard of, many thought it could not be done. Annapurna is the epic book that influenced ED Vestures when he was a boy toward his mountain climbing greatness ( climbed all 13 8000M peaks with no supplemental oxygen...all his books 5 star see my reviews).Annapurna is 278 pages of great adventure and lots of action. No boring parts. I read it in 3 days.Here's a tidbit of the book to wet your appetite.A group of some of the greatest mountain climbers is assembled with a great doctor/surgeon Oudot, and support people for the expedition. Local loyal helpers/guides called Sherpas and Coolies to help carry the heavy loads are hired. The leaders Sahibs have as their expedition leader Maurice Herzog. Herzog is seen as brave but sensibly cautious and uses lots of scouting of different routes. A higher mountain was originally thought OK to climb but it is found too dangerous at this time. Scouting more through glaciers around impassable ridges , a hidden valley a route to Annapurna is found. Already they are experiencing bad weather and are in a race with time as Monsoon rains are coming soon. Some routes are found to be no good. Lots of dangers, crevasses, and avalanches. Five ascending camps are set up. The expedition is rapidly breaking down due to health problems.Herzog and Louise Lachenal make it to the top. All expedition members helped and team work was great. A lot of unselfish people. However Herzog loses his gloves and develops frostbite of the fingers and toes. Lachenal has frostbite of the toes and heal. Some of the others have snow blindness and injuries. The expedition physically is a mess They must hurry to a lower camp for the doctor Oudot to try to save them. Gangrene has set in. Toes and fingers must be amputated.There is a great chapter of the expedition's passage from Nepal to India and meeting the Maharajah in his palace.I won't say too much more and ruin the book for you.Anyone loving true adventure stories and human endurance against incredible obstacles will love this book. This book was the one that many great climbers got their inspiration from. 5 stars and proudly added to our family library.

I purchased this book after summiting Mt. Rainier with Ed Viesturs. Ed told me, during our climb, this was the book that inspired him to dedicate his life to mountaineering and becoming the first American to summit all 14 of the 8,000K summits in the world without supplemental oxygen. Being a novice mountaineer myself, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I found the book to be well written and extremely thoughtful. Today, when most mountaineering books are written as "tell-all" accounts of an expedition, I found this book to be refreshing because it was more about the experience of conquering the mountain than it was about airing dirty laundry about the participants. This particular climb still amazes me, because this team of explorers summited Annapurna (an extremely difficult and demanding mountain) on their first attempt. This book is about courage, determination, perseverance and dedication. This is a must read if you are the least bit interested in mountaineering.

A marvelous window into early Himalayan climbing. One would laugh at the primitive equipment, the false maps, and the disappearing mountains if the stakes hadn't been so high (life or death). Eventually the French team finds Annapurna, but the weather threatens to end the attempt. A thrilling account.

A classic review by a humble man, not focused on his own superlative abilities but on the unselfish tenacity of both him and his equally qualified teammates, the key word being teammates. Without fanfare he relates a most amazing story of truly dedicated, tough mountaineers. This is not for the reader that leans toward soap opera but for one that values looking into lives that displayed unadorned courage.

Great book - it's hard to put down once you start it. The fact that these guys were climbing without all the modern day equipment is extremely impressive!
