This book is misleading and blatantly ignores controversial parts of these women’s histories. The section on Margaret Sanger blatantly ignores the fact that she is controversial because she was racist. The book says she's a controversial figure but not why and misleads you to think it's because she was a pioneer in birth control because it was taboo at the time, not because she was an advocate for birth control and was big on eugenics and not wanting “lower races” to reproduce. The inaccuracy and misinformation of this page makes me question the historical accuracy of everyone else’s stories. It’s also largely white, cis, straight stories being told.

Full of beautiful artwork featuring 100 rule-breaking, precedent-setting women, this delightful volume is not only the perfect coffee table accent (all the pretty pictures!) but it's a brilliant and inspiring read to boot. The depictions are very stunning, and the write ups that accompany each illustration are jammed with useful tidbits of information. Who knew a history lesson could be so much fun?

I got a copy of this book while reviewing children's books for Women's History month. It's definitely not for young children (so deliciously bloody!), but I'll pull it down from the shelves once my boys are clsoer to 10-12ish (not sure, they're only preschoolers now). Most importantly - they MUST read books like this on influential women in history because how else are we going to break the glass ceiling if our son's aren't helping?I'm buying a copy for my mom for mother's day and asking for a copy of this for my birthday. I LOVE this book about kick-ass, name-taking, tough and ruthless women throughout history. Whenever anyone makes the old argument of why we don't feature more women in history because 'not enough women did anything imporant' - grab this nice heavy book and beat them soundly about the face and neck with it. And then behead them and seize their land, because THAT IS HOW BAD GIRLS DO.

This book is about bad girls. "Bad Girls” is an attractive title that would lure many readers - parents, girls, teachers, and several others. But looking at the fine print we find the title in contradiction to the content. The author, Ann Shen, does not mean “bad” in the sense of naughty or mischievous, but refers rather to those who challenge or disobey the rules or the social norms. She presents a list of 100 girls (women) of various backgrounds with a brief description of their achievements and how they overcame insurmountable problems to achieve their goals. These achievements span a broad spectrum of activities including art, science, politics, sports, music, legal issues as well as cultural problems. The author proudly points out that she interviewed or researched everyone on the list. The idea is to give the reader a synopsis of their background and career to whet the reader’s appetite so as to pursue the subject for further details, if interested. Many on the list of 100 are famous and familiar to most of us, like Joan of Arc, Catherine the Great, Amelia Earhart, Marie Curie, Margaret Thatcher, Martha Graham and several others. While it is enjoyable to refresh our memories about the famous women we already know, many of the others on the list are equally intriguing . For example, how many of us are familiar with Princess Khutulun (1260-1306). She was the great-great-granddaughter of Genghis Khan. She became a legend among the nomadic Mongol tribes as an undefeated wrestler of suitors who wanted to marry her. She bet with every suitor on 100 horses if they lost. Since no one was able to beat her she collected huge sums of money. She later rode into battle with her father, Khaidu, and they always won. Since she never lost, her tribe believed she was blessed by the heavens and was considered almost sacred. What prompts an author to write a book about the achievements of 100 famous women? If nothing else, perhaps at least to provide this book as a testimonial to the amazing things women have achieved throughout the centuries under insurmountable obstacles. We tend to forget the past; but there were times when women were not allowed to be teachers, professors, authors, athletes, doctors, lawyers, engineers, architects, soldiers and many other professions. Marie Curie was denied a science teaching position at her home university in Poland because she was a woman. Jane Austen was reluctant to declare her name on her books because of her gender. Evidence is abundant. Today, more than ever before, women have access to almost everything. Is it an exaggeration to say they are spoiled for choice, just like men? But who deserves the gratitude other than those daring groups of women (and others like them) who courageously paved all the roads for them?FR Qubein Sept. 2017

I got this for a 9 year old thinking it would be perfect. I flipped through the pages and as everyone else has stated it is beautiful! However, I did not find it age appropriate. Firstly it would be a difficult read, its written eloquently. It has mild curse words (bada*s, pis*ed off). And despite being a very sex positive household I felt some of the themes were too much for 12 and younger (rape, abortion, multiple affairs/sexual relationships, using sex to manipulate) lastly some of the stories are just violent and mention dismemberment, torture, etc. As an adult, I think the book was fantastic, but I would not recommend it as a book for a child, if not for any other reason than it's written for an adult reading level.

Instead of the huge wide margins, it would have been nice if they had used a font in a readable size. It wasn't to save space that the print was so tiny because most of the stories did not cover the page allotted. Charming illustrations and a good variety of choices of "bad girls". It is too bad they did not do a better job formatting it.

This is a beautifully illustrated book that is great for anyone. It introduces inspiring, diverse women in a way that is accessible to most age groups. When reading this book, I found myself googling and further researching many of the women mentioned, I was that inspired! I already bought another copy for my girlfriend and she also loves it.

Kindred

Review

In Kindred, Octavia Butler creates a road for the impossible and a balm for the unbearable. It is everything the literature of science fiction can be.—Walter Mosley"Butler's characters are so vivid and the racist milieu in which they struggle to survive so realistically depicted that one cannot finish Kindred without feeling changed. It is a shattering work of art with much to say about love, hate, slavery, and racial dilemmas, then and now."—Sam Frank, Los Angeles Herald-Examiner"Like emotion that uplifts and enriches, like exquisite music or the taste of some special candy remembered from childhood, I never wanted Kindred to end. It overwhelmed me, dominated me, drew me on page after page. To express my total admiration and wonder for the originality of this surpassingly compelling novel, I am driven to a despised cliché: I could not put it down! It is a book that simply will not be denied; its power is hypnotic. Kindred is a story that hurts: I take that to be the surest indicator of genuine Art. It is an important novel, filled with powerful human insight and the shocking impact of the most commonplace experiences viewed in a new way, and it demands that once begun, the reader continue till it has done its work on the heart and mind and soul. Octavia Butler is a writer who will be with us for a long, long time, and Kindred is that rare, magical artifact . . . the novel one returns to, again and again, through the years, to learn, to be humbled, and to be renewed. Do not, I beg you, deny yourself this singular experience."—Harlan Ellison"Truly terrifying. . . . A book you'll find hard to put down." —Essence"Butler's books are exceptional. . . . She is a realist, writing the most detailed social criticism and creating some of the most fascinating female characters in the genre . . . real women caught in impossible situations." —Dorothy Allison, The Village Voice"Butler's literary craftsmanship is superb." —The Washington Post Book World"Her books are disturbing, unsettling… In a field dominated by white male authors, Butler's African-American feminist perspective is unique, and uniquely suited to reshape the boundaries of the sci-fi genre." —Bill Glass, L. A. Style"One of the most original, thought-provoking works examining race and identity." —Lynell George, Los Angeles Times"This powerful novel about a modern black woman transported back in time to a slave plantation in the antebellum South is the perfect introduction to Butler's work and perspectives for those not usually enamored of science fiction. . .A harrowing, haunting story." —John Marshall, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

I am a 72 yo white male who was born and raised in the deep South. I left that environment as a teenager, which probably made the difference in my attitude toward the significance of race. Butler made me feel like I was that 26-year-old black woman. Her skillful writing transported me to a place and time that I am certain truly existed in the manner she constructed. I found myself doing some soul-searching after reading the novel kindred. I wish I had been exposed to her while she was still alive, But I will probably wind up reading all of her books now.

I love sci-fi, so when I first heard about Octavia Butler, I jumped on Amazon and bought the first book I saw.In Kindred, Dana, a modern young African American writer who recently married an older white man, gets mysteriously transported back in time to a pre-Civil War plantation owned by the family of her oldest known relative, Rufus. Dana is called back to save Rufus’s life over and over again, presumably preserving her own life in the process. What happens to her in the past stays with her in a very real way. This novel is incredible. I couldn’t put it down. It was written in 1979, but it could have been written last year. Elements of Butler’s own life and frustrations with race issues during her life shine through in parts. This novel deals with love, familial connection, loss, time travel, slavery, and the complex emotions that arise when these things interconnect. To quote Dana:"Strangely, they seemed to like him, hold him in contempt, and fear him all at the same time. This confused me because I felt just about the same mixture of emotions for him myself. I had thought my feelings were complicated because he and I had such a strange relationship. But then, slavery of any kind fostered strange relationships. Only the overseer drew simple, unconflicting emotions of hatred and fear when he appeared briefly. But then, it was part of the overseer’s job to be hated and feared while the master kept his hands clean."This is a great book. It makes the deep personal toll slavery takes on its victims very real. I’m seeking out more of Octavia Butler’s books in the near future.

This book kept me enthralled from the beginning to the end. The thought of Dana being transported from time to time from her present day home in the 1970's back to a slave plantation that was owned by one of her ancestors. It provides a glimpse into the lives of slavery from Dana's perspective and her comping to grips with the fact that she could be stuck in that time indefinitely. Each time Dana is transported back in time her stay becomes longer and she becomes entangled in the plantation and with the people and does her best to survive and make compromises to ensure her future existence.I do not want to give up too much of the story. The author did an excellent job of portraying the characters and developing the story. I would have liked to know why Dana had such a strong connection with Rufus, but this did not take much away from the story.I listened to the audio version as well as read the book.

First, I am not a big fan of science fiction. For a reading challenge, I was tasked with reading a work of science fiction by an author of color or with a main character of color. Two birds, one book with Octavia Butler’s Kindred. Plus, it gives me a reason to read a prolific writer who I have been ignoring. Extra bonus, I would consider this Sci Fi light. There are no aliens, no robots, and no weird machines. Only time travel with no devices required. The novel is set in 1976 in California. African American Dana is newly married to white guy Will. They are both writers, he more successful. They move into a new home. Dana feels dizzy and poof—there she is in antebellum Maryland saving a white boy named Rufus from drowning. Task accomplished and she returns home, finding that she was gone for only a few seconds in 1979 but for a longer spell in the 1800’s. Rufus is the young son of a plantation and slave owner and is also a distant relation to Dana. Whenever he is in danger (which is often) she is somehow summoned to save him. Her visits to the south last for longer periods of time and sometimes her husband Will accompanies her. Dana believes she must continue to save Rufus otherwise he will not be alive to father a child with a slave; that child being one of Dana’s ancestors. No Rufus, no Dana. Dana obviously does not fit in and passes herself off as a free black from the north, though Will is her “master” and lover. On the plantation she is often treated as a slave because there is nothing more threatening to slave owners than an educated black woman. She herself is often in danger and suffers atrocities along with the other slaves. This was a quick read and an interesting story, but I did not love it. I’m not a fan of time travel in novels, but that was a very minor part of the story. It was fairly easily accepted by all involved, including those on the plantation. Most of the book takes place on the plantation and these are the most compelling sections. That said, I don’t think that those scenes were much different than any other book set in that period. Toni Morrison and Kathleen Grissom (The Kitchen House and Glory Over Everything) are much better writers. Also, some of the interesting dynamics were not explored in enough depth for me. Dana’s love/hate relationship with Rufus, her relationship with her white husband both in current and past times, and her fear that her husband would be altered by his exposure to conventions in the early 1800’s. In fairness, this book was written in 1979 and the author may have gone as far as one could go with those issues. This book is 3.5 stars for me. I am unlikely to read another of Ms. Butler’s books.

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—When Mrs. Iraina's ballet class gets an unexpected newcomer—an alligator—the diverse cast of students are surprised but decide to welcome her. They begin to affectionately refer to her as Tanya, after a famous ballerina, but her large tail quickly becomes a problem during practice. Together the students come up with a brand-new dance that showcases Tanya and her wild tail. The dance is a huge success at the recital, and Tanya happily returns to the wild, where she continues to dance with her animal friends. The illustrations are stylized and quirky, and the plot is engaging, with jokes that adults will appreciate peppered throughout. The narrative conveys the story's message of inclusion in a subtle manner, but the book's title makes this important theme abundantly clear. VERDICT A fun read-aloud and a welcome addition to medium and large collections, best shared one-on-one or in a small group setting.—Candyce Pruitt-Goddard, Sno-Isle Libraries, Marysville, WA

Review

“The students in Mrs. Iraina’s dance class are surprised to be joined by an unexpected visitor. They invite her to stay, because ‘who would be brave enough to tell a 450-pound alligator she couldn’t?” In this sweet, humorous story about acceptance, Mrs. Iraina and the class display common sense, quick thinking, and good humor. They get a supply of Alligator Chow to prevent any inappropriate snacking and devise special choreography to showcase their new friend’s talents. The class, three girls and a boy, delight in dressing as a duck, a turtle, a frog, and a raccoon for their production of an original ballet, The Legend of the Swamp Queen. The alligator disappears as suddenly as she arrived, but weeks later a special map is delivered, with an invitation for the class to attend a dance performance put on by . . . an actual duck, turtle, frog, raccoon, and a whole alligator family! Bright cartoon-style illustrations, detailed with black outlines and complete with comically expressive faces and gestures, perfectly suit the humorous premise.” —Booklist  “When Mrs. Iraina’s ballet class gets an unexpected newcomer—an alligator—the diverse cast of students are surprised but decide to welcome her. This book is another winner from Andrea Zuill. (Wolf Camp is so funny). It is sweet and delivers a subtle message on how to include others. The main attraction here though, is her artwork. The quirky style is just delightful.

I love the humor of author-illustrator Andrea Zuill. This is a wonderful, silly, and sweet book! Especially for any kid who feels like they might not fit in!

Fun and funny book to read with your little ones.

In our house we have random dance parties. Usually it starts by me turning on music and soon Ginny will start dancing then Mason and finally Miles. It makes us giggle and laugh about how funny we move our body while dancing to random music. In this book ,"Dance is for Everyone" by Andrea Zuill is about a alligator wanting to dance ballet. The dance teacher and her dance class were very surprised but tries to communicate with the alligator. Can they find a way to include the alligator into the dance. My kids thought this book was so funny watching the the alligator try the many different dance moves needed. I loved how that the students tried to help the alligator and when they found out that what they were currently doing wasn't going to work. They adapted the program so that way the alligator was included. Much like those with disabilities. This story helped me talk about others and their disabilities but also those who are not good at one thing. In how we can include them into our own activities. It was interesting to see my kids thoughts and understanding. As sometimes even in our own home we have to do things differently because of Miles and his disability. That way he is feeling included and helps to make it fair for everyone. The illustrations in this book are very simple and could be different and more colorful.

When an alligator shows up at ballet class, the teacher and other students decide to just make it work. They have to make some adjustments, but eventually everything goes swimmingly and they come up with a fantastic new recital piece. But after the recital, the new student disappears. Did something go wrong? What happened to the new dancer?I love how the teacher and students react to the alligator showing up, and their adaptations. The story is both humorous and sweet. Obviously, there are lots of potential conversations that could come up with this story from the fact that really anyone can dance if they want to accepting others despite their differences to the question of how you are helping others with your skills. Read and think or read and just laugh, either is totally ok.

My son received this book as a gift, and he loves it! We read it for the first time before bed tonight, and he spent the next 30 minutes dreaming up fanfic he plans to write tomorrow. He found the premise of the book (alligator randomly joins human dance class) absolutely hilarious.

To be clear, I have not read the book yet, but I read the description and I read her previous book. And I loved it I cannot wait till I buy this one and read it. Andrea has great style and her books show a lot of imagination and I treasure the time I spend with her books.

Really cute book!

Diary of a Napoleonic Foot Soldier

From Publishers Weekly

Of the half - million men who invaded Russia in Napoleon's army in June 1812, barely 25,000 survived. One who did was the author of this diary, Jakob Walter (1788-1864), a German private soldier from Westphalia. First conscripted in 1806, he was recalled to duty in 1809 and again in 1812. Walter's writing is unemotional and non-interpretive; he describes straightforwardly what he experienced. The account of the 1812 campaign--Napoleon's march on Moscow and inglorious retreat--takes up three-quarters of this short volume and constitutes its most interesting portion. In a chronicle of progressive demoralization, Walter observes how the instinct for self-preservation, under the pressure of Cossack attacks and treachery by erstwhile allies, leads to savagery among Napoleon's troops. The common-soldier perspective is rare among the mass of material left by veterans of the 1812 campaign and the book will be of interest to the general reader as well as the scholar. This edition includes six short letters home by other German soldiers in the Grand Army, all less interesting than Walter's diary. Raeff is professor of Russian studies at Columbia University. From Library Journal

More memoir than diary, this slim volume contains the reminiscences of a young German conscript into the army of Napoleon in the campaigns of 1806, 1807, 1809, and 1812-13. As such, it represents one of the few historical documents that portray the life and death of common soldiers of the period. As the army fought its way back and forth across Eastern Europe, young Walter encountered Poles, Russians, Jews, and other groups, and his descriptions of his interactions with these "others" illuminates attitudes and prejudices of German troops of the period. The firsthand description of the retreat of a starving army from Moscow and the attendant breakdown of discipline and morale will interest military historians as well. Walter's book is reminiscent of Guy Sajer's World War II memoir The Forgotten Soldier ( LJ 12/15/70) and should be popular with a similar audience; it belongs in libraries with Napoleonic history or fiction collections.-- Stanley Planton, Ohio Univ.Chillicothe Lib.Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

It is a fascinating account of an ordinary foot soldiers life in the army of Napoleon. A rather brutal life at that. Certainly there was nothing romantic about it. I had always believed that most of the casualties that the Grand Army of the French Empire suffered were on the retreat from Moscow. However the attrition rate on the march to Moscow was astounding also. It was a very badly planned campaign with the lack of food causing so many poor soldiers to die. As one who was an ordinary conscripted soldier myself once upon a time I was quiet upset at reading about the way these men were treated. It brings home the horrors of war in all its starkness, and how unimportant the ordinary soldier was in the eyes of the generals and 'Powers that be'. Cannon fodder is a mild description. I hope more diaries like this are discovered and published.

Mine came from my seller with a slightly noticeable crease on the cover-protector, and more marks in it than I expected, but it was definitely in the advertised condition. Nice, easy to read, little if any damage to the pages, no funny smells, and most of all - the reading was excellent.

A fascinating period that Americans may no little about told by a young soldier in Napoleon's army as he trudges towards Moscow in the dead of winter. Remarkedly he never loses his hope or trust in God. Nor does he question his superiors as soldiers might today.

This is what it is. Not profound or hugely insightful, but if you are interested in these wars, or reading natural accounts or letters of times past, this was a quick read full of pathos but not bathos, and a reminder of just how lucky we have it. His description of trying to get over the last bridge, among a sea of people and cannon fire, taking 4 hours, is amazing. He was a lucky man, and it is clear he knew it.

Napoleonic campaigns and especially Napoleonic campaign in Russia is something that interests me a great deal for many reasons and I am always eager to read eyewitness' accounts. I was so happy when I found this book, I wanted to hear how soldiers coped through, not just read something from generals and officers' point of view. This book provides such perspective and as another reviewer noted it is surprisingly well written.

I am so glad I was not there and did not share his experiences. I read it twice. The parts where he describes how they "foraged" AKA stole from the population is interesting and what a bad time it was to be a small farmer. He describes the retreat from Russia too . . . . I probably would have died.

Excellent account of the invasion of Moscow - one of the most readable and interesting ones I've found. Perhaps that's because it was written by a common soldier not long after the war. Informative introduction, too.

a great look into the past.

My name's Toswiah, I'd say. Toswiah Green. Have you ever heard of me? But my name is Evie now. And I've never been brave. I can never tell anybody the real truth. But I can write it and say this story you're about to read is fiction. I can give it a beginning, middle, and end. A plot. A character named Evie. A sister named Anna. Call it fiction because fiction's what it is. Evie and Anna aren't real people. So you can't go somewhere and look this up and say Now I know who this story's about. Because if you did, it would kill my father."Readers facing their own identity crises will find familiar conflicts magnified and exponentially compounded here, yet instantly recognizable and optimistically addressed.""As she did so compellingly in Miracle's Boys and other books, Woodson tells a story of people torn apart by grief who eventually find a way to leave their sorrow in the past. Her poetic, low-key, yet vivid writing style perfectly conveys the story's atmosphere of quiet intensity.""Sophisticated readers ... will come away with images and characters who are impossible to forget."

This novel reminded me of one of the many Grateful Dead songs that helped me through tragedy over the years, Black Peter. "Just want to have a little peace to die and a friend or two I love at hand...See here how everything lead up to this day and it's just like any other day that's ever been." Sometimes a day comes along that changes everything, steals the face right off your head and leaves nothing but your soul.

Great book, interesting ending. Not for young kids because the book is very confusing. I recommend the book for middle schoolers and high schoolers

I bought this book for my daughter after the author visited her school and because it was on the official summer reading list. She really enjoyed the book but it was way too short for her (fifth grade). I wish the good authors like Ms. Woodson would write some meaty books that the kids who love to read can sink their teeth into. It's hard to find books that advance readers who are 10,11,12 can read without the subject matter being to mature.

Great book for a teen. Bought it for my daughter's reading project and she enjoyed the story.

I love Jaqueline Woodson!! She’s so dope! This book definitely captivated me, page by page. I couldn’t put it down! I wish there was a sequel to it, I gotta have more!

I got to the end of the book for a cliff hanger. Not sure if it was because it was on my kindle, but I wasn't sure if there would be a part two. Is there a sequel? Overall good read. I like the way the author depicts each character along with the sights and sounds.

Purchased for school. Didn't hear any complaints (and believe me I would) so assume they are happy.

I purchased this book for my son for an assignment. It arrived timely. Would not recommend this book if you are not crazy about your child reading a book with profanity. It is a good story. For this to be a children's book it is amazing that this author would choose to incorporate that language in this book just to impact the storyline or to get her point across. Other than that the book is fine. It arrived as promised.
