Although The Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (a.k.a BABoK) is now considered the bible of the business analysis worldwide, I can argue that Karl Wiegers’ “Software Requirements v3” should be dubbed as the survival guide for earnest IT Business Analysts. The BABoK has been written by different authors to be a comprehensive and horizontal framework on the subject, and I can say that its third version is much handy than the older one in terms of the logical soundness of the BA practice. However, Wiegers’ “Software Requirements” is the real practical and actionable book on “The Art of Requirements Engineering”. It is not a UML course or how-to, but rather a notation-agnostic complete trove of tips and advice that we need –as business analysts- to master in order to promote the BA profession beyond the mere current activities of hasty requirements collection and -then- mindless superficial dull documentation. Karl brought back deliberation and profoundness into this craft.

Poor requirements is often cited as the number one cause of reduced quality and efficiency within an organization. This has also been my experience. Time to take the matter in your own hands. This is a solid book on requirements development and management that has helped navigate me and my team within a waterfall/iterative organization during our transition to more agile approaches. This book provides many tools and insightful data to help structure and model software requirements and, to some degree, software architectures. I would consider this a classic and would recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their business engineering skills.

The book content is great, 5 stars for that.However, the Kindle edition is flawed for the following reasons:* No table of content is available from the standard menu. This severely hampers navigation within the book.* It is not visible which chapter you are currently reading.* No reconciliation to page numbers from the printed book.This is a text book, not a novel, so the lack of these features makes me sorry I did not buy the print edition.

What I love about this book is that it is so easy to pick this up, get several great ideas on how to fix whatever kind of problem you are facing in software development, and then use those ideas to implement something today that is really going to make a difference in what you can deliver to your customers. Wiegers and Beatty give pragmatic examples and "oops" stories on everything from Agile and analytics through real-time embedded systems that demonstrate the key points you need to know to make your project successful. The book also includes templates, tips, and project-specific details to help you use what you learn.I have used the second edition of this book to help me work with software teams on problems ranging from reducing defects and increasing consulting revenue through implementing industry-standard requirements such as PCI. The third edition of the book builds on the second by increasing its coverage on topics such as dashboard reporting, data requirements, and data modeling. The book is meant to be read cover-to-cover but you can still get a lot out of it by reading what you need, as you need it.My favorite section in this third edition is the expanded discussion on quality attributes. This is an area that is so often overlooked in software development because we tend to assume the best and forget to plan for the worst. This section explains the different types of quality controls and how to know which ones to use based on the type of project you are working on. The authors do a great job throughout the book in explaining how to gracefully handle software errors to keep your data, users, and possibly your customers safe from harm.

There are many very good books about requirements. This book is in a hurry. It wastes no time. It is on a mission to bring you information you can immediately use. I have struggled with requirements, in writing them, and in improving them across the organization. This book gives the reader practical advice on finding, writing, and managing requirements for software projects. Other books I read, glean what I can, and put them away. This book I keep on hand, not as a prescriptive source, but as a guide, a mentor's view. This book will get the reader past thinking about requirements to managing them.

A nice book for someone that is new to the IT business analysis. It is quite comprehensive, and it provides a lot of guidance and nice real life examples. All in all, I recommend this book as a starting point for someone who wants to learn IT business analysis.However, it is definitely not a “Bible” of Business Analysis. Sometimes, reading the book, I had a feeling that authors lack "the big picture”; and quite often, that they are trying to impose as a dogma their own approach to the process of gathering and presenting software requirements.

Although it's called "Software Requirements", this book is more pertinent for project managers and business analysts as opposed to software architects and programmers. It's still a good read, and is full of practices that you and your team should probably consider implementing to improve you software design efficacy.

It was a difficult effort to document and celebrate the mostly American Army soldiers who, at great cost to their personal safety, located and rescued this booty and began the process of repatriation, but author Robert M. Edsel does a fine job. In the beginning the cadre of "Monuments Men" (officially MFAA for monuments, fine art and archives) faced a painful lack of recognition, which to the military mind meant they barely existed and did not qualified for funding or transportation. On the ground, these career museum curators, restoration artists and university teachers sought to get into Germany during the "void" period between the retreat of the withering Third Reich and the occupation and imposition of order by Allied troops. (In point of fact, they sometimes found themselves in German villages ahead of the liberators!) The best teams seem to be those who combined the meticulous talents of restorationists like George Stout with the impatient, get-it-done approach of cultural experts like Lincoln Kerstein.Robert M. Edsel deserves congratulations for crafting this well-researched and highly readable text, and achieving the elusive goal of a book that combines "page-turner" quality with so much vital information. Another very good book along the same lines, but more limited in scope, is 2015's THE LADY IN GOLD by Anne-Marie O'Connor. The big note to start this review is that if you watched the movie, fine—it was entertaining and you gotta love the actors. However, if you want the real scoop on the real Monuments Men, you must read the book. I’m not sure why Hollywood (does most of what it does) decided to change the characters or make light of the contributions put forth by Rose Valland by intimating her having a crush on Matt Damon’s character. The Monuments Men were courageous and enterprising, pushing to be in active war zones in their pursuit of art of every kind. They worked closely with residents and a broad array of military personnel. Where the bigwigs so often took the credit—shock—these were the men behind the scenes doing their job and saving millions of pieces of art from the destruction of Hitler’s madness. The book follows the team from their inception to the close of their work. The author, Robert M. Edsel, did a brilliant job solidly taking us along the path of the battles while not losing sight of the point of the story. You may find yourself doing what I did throughout the book—gasping in horror as more and more of what Hitler was doing comes to light. I knew about his confiscation of artwork from everyone, everywhere, and yet I was astounded to find out even more of his evil egomaniacal ways. There are descriptions of the men—and Rose—that I noted along the way, James Rorimer, “He had no practice in failure, and he had no intention of starting now.” Ms. Valland, “Destiny is not one push, she thought as she waited to cross a quiet street on that cold Paris evening years later, but a thousand small moments that through insight and hard work you line up in the right direction, like a magnet does with metal shavings.” You’ll enjoy reading about Harry Ettlinger’s journey with the Monuments Men. A German Jew with American citizenship, he served bravely along with the others. George Stout, “’The sun is fine and, after the rat race, I begin to remember that I am myself and not merely a set of functions.’” Having been blessed with the experience of standing in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam—a haven of art—reading that paintings were taken from there made me sad and appreciate at all that was saved. It took them six years for the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives to return what they’d found to the proper owners. This book reads like an adventure story and will keep you interested the entire way through. If you like history and heroes, read this book, don’t just watch the movie.

This book could be a great resource if it wasn’t so outdated. Someone else who has been in recent college admission from 2015 on should write a book describing current trends

I found the book to be informative, but dated (12 years old as of this review). I have to believe that many of the admissions office "lifers" that the author occasionally describes in not-so-admiring terms have either moved on or had their eyes opened to the need to attract the best of the best. The information on the Common Application may have been accurate 12 years ago, but is wrong now: all of the highly selective schools now accept them, along with a school-specific supplement. An earlier reviewer mentioned that the acceptance rates shown are way too high. I also suspect that admissions evaluation procedures may have changed somewhat since the advent of online applications and ubiquitous computerization.I guess the bottom line is: there are gems to be mined in this book, but don't use it as your only source of information.

As its title suggests, this a practical, no-nonsense book on how to get admitted to a top college, with all the inside information that the author gathered in her four years as assistant director of admissions at Dartmouth (where she also went to college).It's an awesome book! I highly recommend it for students (or parents of students) applying to any competitive college, or if you're just curious (as I was) about how this mysterious process works. There is lots of juicy stuff about who average admissions officers are (people trying to identify greatness, but not great themselves...), how they evaluate applicants, and how much of an advantage it is to be an athlete, minority, or legacy. There is also great advice about which essays work best, strategies for making your application stand out, etc.

I had heard about M. Hernadez before when the book was released in the late 90's. However, things have certainly changed on many fronts, specifically college admissions procedures. My niece was in tenth grade when I came upon an excerpt from the revised book and was blown away by the needed preparation to get recognized by most colleges today. "A Is For Admission" cuts to the core of what a student, as well as parents, needs to do to prepare for this challenging journey called College Admissions & the Common App! Highly recommend this to parents of students entering highschool. Start sooner if possible!

I checked online through several college sites to find a book that gives a concise, informative review of the admissions process. This is the title that kept coming up. "A is for Admission" has the details that flesh out the generalized articles in annual editions of U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Colleges". Now the system actually makes sense to me, and the book is an easy read. My son just signed up for 9th grade and I wondered if I was starting too early, but after reading the book I believe middle school is the best time to start. The way I see it--our kids tell us their goals and we give them the support they need to reach those goals. This book helped me as a parent to better understand how to support my son. I would love to see a book of this quality that described the admission procedures at California's top universities and colleges.

Sometimes, you get lucky. For instance, this book writes about the extremely difficult time people have in getting admitted into the Ivies. Since the printing of the book in the 20th century, certain facts have made the book's lessons more poignant for the Ivies and very pertinent to many other schools.When the book was written, the low admissions percentages for the less competitive Ivies were still lower than the vast majority of non-Ivies. Now, those low numbers pale in contrast to many midwestern LAC's, do not even compare to some of the Claremont Colleges or mini-Ivies, and are only a shadow of what that particular school accepts with today's Generation Y. The competitveness will supposedly reach its height in two years -- just in time for my youngest.So, you may ask, what does this have to do with the "other schools?" Everything. It gives you a perspective of what the people on the other side of the application encounter. Hundreds, if not thousands, of truly worthy applications come across their desks each year. But, the school's admittance numbers are finite. How the schools hone the masses to the select few is -- amazingly -- a quantitative system which (for the most part) is fair. The author mentions the inequities which arise in the system, but when reviewing the measuring of the Academic Index (AI) and its 3-part formula of SAT + SAT 2 + CRS), the schools most often get to the fairest result.(For the curious, go to [...] for a quick summary of this formula.)This book also warns you not to buy many of the other books peddled by others out there -- she even warns us about one book printed by her very own publisher. One example of these books' false promises: a great essay will get the student in the competitive schools. But, we learn the opposite. Fairly enough, the essay will not even be reviewed unless the AI meets a certain level. So, do not buy the "great essay that got people into Ivies" books thinking the great essay is all one needs for admission. In fact, unless you have 700 SAT's, the essay probably will NOT even be read!!!After reading about the AI, take your own numbers, plug them into the formulaic equation (see internet address above), and you will soon see whether you should shoot for the moon or be more modest in your college goals.If you discover that modesty is the best policy -- I highly recommend reading my favorite college book: "Colleges That Change Lives : 40 Schools You Should Know About Even If You're Not a Straight-A Student" by Loren Pope. If that is enjoyed, try a related book: "Greenes' Guides to Educational Planning: The Hidden Ivies : Thirty Colleges of Excellence (Greenes' Guides to Educational Planning)" by Howard Greene.And, like those books tell you, education will very likely be more enjoyable in the smaller nurturing environments of the listed LAC's.

Purchased as a gift for my husband who does homebrewing. Much of the information at the beginning is fairly elementary for those who have been brewing for a while, so this is great for anyone who's new to the process. The illustrations are beautiful and there's some great info on varieties of hops, etc for more advanced brewing.

I love beer and I have been interested in learning about the brewing process. This book was very easy to read and understand. I would recommend to anyone who would like a better understanding of what it takes to brew your own beer.

I cannot recommend this incredible manga enough. If you dig the movie, which of course you do, this thing will blow you away. Plus it's a really quick read, I knocked out all 6 volumes in about 9 hours, and thats just because I spent a lot of time really enjoying the artwork. I don't know how else to put it, this is a must read. Amazing.

This is an epic manga. If you like sci-fi manga then this really is a must read. It is hard to find however. I don't see all 6 volumes in stores or in any of the many libraries near me. There is always a volume missing.

With "Akira" Katsuhiro Otomo gave to readers what was to be one of the best and most celebrated science fiction works of the late 20th century. Thank you amazon for delivering the availability to buy such great works.

All in all, the book is a satisfying read. It leaves some of the mysteries open, like whatever happens to that mega-psychic boy Akira, and what's with Kaneda, Kei, and their motorbike gang with the ruined Tokyo.It is both satisfying and saddening to see a good story ends, yet I would rather see it end there than be dragged on and on as in the case of many other comic books.

I would give this book 10 stars if I could. Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch is a very well-written and heartwarming book. The illustrations are bright, colorful, and adorable. I purchased the book to read to my 2nd grade students during the week of Valentine's Day. Unlike many other books written for this holiday, this book can be used to address many of the Common Core Standards for reading comprehension. We created an anchor chart of how Mr. Hatch changes throughout the story. We created a Cause and Effect heart to record cause and effect in the story. We also did a directed draw of Mr. Hatch (he is just tooo cute) and wrote what he was like at the beginning of the story on one side of the picture and how he was different at the end of the story on the other side of the picture. We had so much fun with this book and my students loved Mr. Hatch. This is a perfect addition to my teacher library!

Found this one for my kids while on a mission to celebrate Valentine's Day. This is, at it's heart, about the transformational effect of love on a lonely man, about reaching out to people you might overlook, about being a part of a community / connecting with people, and about how a person can enrich others' lives by sharing their unique strengths and talents. That's a LOT to successfully pack into a picture book! It teaches empathy, and it's really SO beautiful. There are 2 things I would tweak, but they are minor and not everyone will mind them:1. I thought I had FINALLY found a valentines book for kids that was exclusively about friendship and platonic love and didn't fall into normal tropes. This is 99% true. But it does subtly allude to the default Valentine's expectation of romance in one little sentence along the lines of "he wondered if any of the *women* who visited [...] had sent him the valentine." Does it make sense for an adult heterosexual male to interpret a valentine as romantic? Yeah of course. Is his sexual or romantic interest relevent to kindergarteners or to the plot? Nope. I replace the word "women" with "people" when I read it to my 5 year olds, who are learning about the different ways we can love others and be loved appropriately, which at 5 doesn't begin with romance. On the other hand, the message that romantic love isn't the only or most meaningful way to connect or be fulfilled as a person is lovely and even a little subversive if that comes across to a kid.2. Towards the end, when everyone lists reasons they love Mr Hatch, every single reason is something he does for them, which subtly implies that love is primarily about what you can get from someone else rather than who they are and mutual support. If Mr. Hatch hadn't helped in these ways, he would not have connected with his neighbors and they wouldn't know him... But a) that would be a bit on them right? And b) I don't relish the possible takeaway that the only people worthy of love and effort are the ones who are useful. So we talk about that. Not a big deal, just a little discussion tacked on to the end along the lines of how pre-valentine Mr. Hatch was lonely, overlooked, and sad, and we shouldn't always expect lonely or sad people to help us; we can also ask ourselves "how can I help them?"I think any book that brings up that kind of convo is good.

This is a charming book for Valentine's Day. My kids have loved it the last two years (ages 5 and 6) and after they have begged me to read the library copy over and over again both years, I purchased our own. Sweet and simple tale about loving our neighbor and what a difference letting someone know they are special can do for a person.

The school psychologist asked me (I'm a librarian) what my favorite book was. I said, "Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch." She asked me about it. So I read her a part of the book and it became her favorite too. Powerful message about kindness and how the smallest deed can make the biggest difference. This book is a great addition to any classroom or library. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

This is one of my all time favorite books. I have used it in read alouds when I was an elementary school teacher and found it to be a perfect springboard to kindness projects. Today, I read it to my own 4 and 6 year children and we all loved it. Get a tissue handy for the middle but the end is very heartwarming!

A very sweet story about empathy towards others-especially those alone during Valentine's Day. I have read this every Valentine's Day to my Kindergarten and First Grade classes. Heartwarming to see their little minds feel for the main character in the story, Mr. Hatch, and cheer for him in the end (I won't spoil the ending).

Somebody Loves You Mr. Hatch is a great book to use during the month of February. Kids forget that their are people who feel lonely and it is not easy for them to make friends. This book helped our class understand that you can make new friends regardless of your age.

What a great message this book teaches! I am so happy I added it to my children's library. After reading it to my kids for the first time, my oldest (age 7) and I had a great conversation about how we act differently when we feel like we are loved and why we should make people feel loved.
