Dorothy Gladys "Dodie" Smith (1895-1990), born in Lancashire, England, was one of the most successful female dramatists of her generation. She wrote Autumn, Crocus, and Dear Octopus, among other plays. She wrote her first novel, I Capture the Castle, in the 1940s while living in America. An immediate success, it marked her crossover from playwright to novelist. I knew within a couple of chapters that this would become one of my favorite books. It is so charming, so pretty, and I adored Cassandra for everything she was and everything she wasn't. Her innocence and refreshing admiration of life (of simple things, of nature & people) was so candid & well-expressed that the book had me walking around in a similar mindset every time I put it down.Her father's mysteriousness kept me as interested in him as she was; just as all of the characters wondered, I found myself constantly wondering "Is he genius? Is he crazy? Is he good? Bad?"Every character, for that matter, was complex and multidimensional. There were no stereotypes, no cliches - just complicated, real people who I loved getting to know.I really enjoyed the diary format - there were moments I felt like she stole my own thoughts. She's probably my all-time favorite character actually - so much depth, charisma, and joy.As for the romance, I loved all of it - I enjoyed the interaction between Cassandra & Stephen, how tense & confusing it was. It was so interesting to see how everything played out ... the way, at first, to Cassandra, Simon was just an awkward-looking man in a beard and then, he quickly becomes so much more to the entire family, changing their lives - in a way they had literally sat around hoping for just moments before.Smith's writing is flawless & beautiful. Taking place in the 1930s, I Capture the Castle is the story of Cassandra Mortmain, the daughter of James Mortmain, an author who once wrote an important and celebrated novel. Unfortunately, James has not been able to write for many years, ever since he was sent to prison for three months for knocking down a neighbor after a misunderstanding involving a cake knife. The Mortmain family - James, second wife and artist’s model, Topaz, older daughter and beauty, Rose, Cassandra, son, Thomas, and Stephen, the orphaned son of the family’s deceased maid – live in the crumbled ruins of a castle on which they have stopped paying rent. They have sold all of their possessions and barely have enough money to survive. Then their neighbor dies, leaving the castle and the neighboring estate, Scoatney, to his estranged American grandson, Simon Cotton, who comes to live at Scoatney along with his brother, Neil and his mother. The Cotton family is smitten with the Mortmain family, and nothing will ever be the same for either family. Cassandra’s coming-of-age story is told through the entries in her diaries.I thought this was a beautifully written book. Dodie Smith does a fantastic job of letting Cassandra’s thoughts and feelings flow onto the paper. We see Cassandra’s growth throughout the book as she progresses through the six-penny journal to the shilling journal and finally to the two-guinea journal as she records her thoughts. We share her hopes and dreams, and happy and sad memories as she tries to navigate growing up in a family struggling to survive, yet endeavoring to live a normal life. Cassandra seems to be the practical one of the family as she tries to help her father write again, schemes with Rose to find a husband, and struggles with Stephen’s feelings for her, as well as her growing feelings for another. It is both a humorous and poignant portrayal of a young girl finding her way in the world, as she also helps and cares for those around her. The novel also examines the English class system and compares English versus American traditions.

I am 60 years old, yet this book plunges me into youth so vividly, I can hardly bear it. It is British through and through. The ancient castle is the only setting it could have, and Cassandra its best narrator. The sections are divided by the narrator's collection of journals,along with their cost, a significant factor. It is long, full of puzzling, eccentric characters and then some so clear and lifelike that I believed the author must have known them intimately. I never wanted this book to end. I only wish I'd found it earlier in my life so I could savor it at many ages.

This is certainly a period piece, set in the 1930's, so while it's somewhat old fashioned in its feel, the writing is some of the most evocative I've read. It's not action packed by any means, and it's entirely first person, but it reads quickly and I found it very enjoyable. I appreciated that some elements if found in another book would have had predictable outcomes, while here they are not entirely predictable yet also manage to avoid the trap of implausible twists.The story is entirely set in England but it's also got a few American characters. That adds an additional element of interest for American readers with English ties, or vice versa. There is one stretch that's a bit melodramatic (meloromatic?) for my taste, but it's an important element that ultimately works well. If you find yourself struggling to maintain interest through that section just push through and know that it's not interminable.I find myself reading many more novels by male authors than female, but I found this female voice, both the author's and the protagonist's, to be a refreshing change of pace. I'm not saying this is a 5-star read, but I do think it is very good.

About the Author

Robert Edsel began his career in the oil and gas exploration business. In 1996 he moved to Europe to pursue his interests in the arts. Settling in Florence seeing some of the great works, he wondered how all of the monuments and art treasures survived the devastation of World War II. During the ensuing years, he devoted himself to finding the answer. In the process, he commissioned major research that has resulted in this book. Robert also coproduced the related documentary film, The Rape of Europa, and wrote Rescuing Da Vinci, a photographic history of an art heist of epic proportions and the Allied rescue effort. The author lives in Dallas. Bret Witter cowrote the bestseller Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World (Grand Central, 2008). He lives in Louisville, KY.

It's fairly well known that in the late Thirties and Forties, the Nazis stole several fortunes' worth of artworks and other value-laden loot from individual Jewish citizens, French and other museums, even national treasuries in the form of gold ingots and coins. Only a few books had been written on the subject of how all this was reclaimed, and by whom, but 2010's MONUMENT MEN has proved the most wide-reaching and popular of all. This book even spawned a Hollywood movie, a (too-jocular) vehicle for George Clooney.Never mind the movie, THE MONUMENTS MEN is a wonderful achievement, blending the military history of the Allies' struggle to liberate Western Europe with the artistic history of what was hidden away in secret tunnels and caves throughout Germany and Austria, and the life stories of the men tasked with reclaiming so many of Western Europe's most enduring cultural treasures. It was a difficult effort to document and celebrate the mostly American Army soldiers who, at great cost to their personal safety, located and rescued this booty and began the process of repatriation, but author Robert M. Edsel does a fine job. In the beginning the cadre of "Monuments Men" (officially MFAA for monuments, fine art and archives) faced a painful lack of recognition, which to the military mind meant they barely existed and did not qualified for funding or transportation. On the ground, these career museum curators, restoration artists and university teachers sought to get into Germany during the "void" period between the retreat of the withering Third Reich and the occupation and imposition of order by Allied troops. (In point of fact, they sometimes found themselves in German villages ahead of the liberators!) The best teams seem to be those who combined the meticulous talents of restorationists like George Stout with the impatient, get-it-done approach of cultural experts like Lincoln Kerstein.Robert M. Edsel deserves congratulations for crafting this well-researched and highly readable text, and achieving the elusive goal of a book that combines "page-turner" quality with so much vital information. In my opinion everyone should read MONUMENTS MEN, especially those with an interest in modern European history, the story of World War Two, or the sufferings of Jews under the Holocaust. Another very good book along the same lines, but more limited in scope, is 2015's THE LADY IN GOLD by Anne-Marie O'Connor. The big note to start this review is that if you watched the movie, fine—it was entertaining and you gotta love the actors. However, if you want the real scoop on the real Monuments Men, you must read the book. I’m not sure why Hollywood (does most of what it does) decided to change the characters or make light of the contributions put forth by Rose Valland by intimating her having a crush on Matt Damon’s character. The Monuments Men were courageous and enterprising, pushing to be in active war zones in their pursuit of art of every kind. They worked closely with residents and a broad array of military personnel. Where the bigwigs so often took the credit—shock—these were the men behind the scenes doing their job and saving millions of pieces of art from the destruction of Hitler’s madness. The book follows the team from their inception to the close of their work. The author, Robert M. Edsel, did a brilliant job solidly taking us along the path of the battles while not losing sight of the point of the story. You may find yourself doing what I did throughout the book—gasping in horror as more and more of what Hitler was doing comes to light. I knew about his confiscation of artwork from everyone, everywhere, and yet I was astounded to find out even more of his evil egomaniacal ways. There are descriptions of the men—and Rose—that I noted along the way, James Rorimer, “He had no practice in failure, and he had no intention of starting now.” Ms. Valland, “Destiny is not one push, she thought as she waited to cross a quiet street on that cold Paris evening years later, but a thousand small moments that through insight and hard work you line up in the right direction, like a magnet does with metal shavings.” You’ll enjoy reading about Harry Ettlinger’s journey with the Monuments Men. A German Jew with American citizenship, he served bravely along with the others. George Stout, “’The sun is fine and, after the rat race, I begin to remember that I am myself and not merely a set of functions.’” Having been blessed with the experience of standing in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam—a haven of art—reading that paintings were taken from there made me sad and appreciate at all that was saved. It took them six years for the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives to return what they’d found to the proper owners. This book reads like an adventure story and will keep you interested the entire way through. If you like history and heroes, read this book, don’t just watch the movie.

45 minutes is all it took for me to finally begin sketching my concepts. Yes, that's it. I opened the book during an hour train commute. It looked like a thick book but I was done in 45 minutes. My brain had absorbed and retained concepts and I sketched the take aways for me right away. I love the author laying out the simple patterns - e.g., 5 shapes are all you need to draw.On the ride back I finished the practice sketches. I feel super comfortable sketching out my product concepts. NOW, I know I'm a visual processor and for years have yearned to have a sketch person on-hand on-demand. Now I have him. it's me. If you KNOW you process information this way and just couldn't get started, this quick read can be the change for you!

I've read a few books on conveying ideas through drawing (Back of the Napkin by Dan Roam & Doodle Revolution by Sunni Brown) that were good and full of information, but neither really captured the gravity of using the ideas within to convey the ideas themselves.Throughout the entire book, Mike uses sketchnotes on every page to give the reader a pragmatic, well laid guide for how to take notes visually. He shares examples of other sketctnoters (giving them a platform to be seen and providing real-life examples of other sketchnoters), teaches you the basics of "formatting" your sketchnotes and the basics of drawing, which I've found incredibly helpful for making sure I'm capturing information as fully and clearly as I had hoped.I've gone through this book multiple times, and because of his ability to break the ideas down into digestible chunks and provide a rich wealth of information, I've started taking sketchnotes in meetings, at church and at conferences.

This is a good book not just for the content but also for the design, and both aspects can inspire you if you are fond of using pen and paper (or at least stylus and tablet) to capture what's happening around you. While the concept of a "Sketch Note" seems like something that should not really have a name, the book makes a great case for why visually oriented notes work well. The book contains many examples of notes using the style, and a number of Sketch Notes by practitioners of the craft, including such details as which pens and notebooks they prefer. The book ends with a number of exercises that encourage you to explore your ability to draw using a variety of techniques which make drawing less terrifying that it might be. From the message, to the examples, to the details such as covers with rounded corners (a form that is useful even for those older than "Board Book Age"), you may find this book inspires you to be creative and more attentive when you are taking notes.

I love the idea of sketchnotes. I expected to love this book, but upon reading it I found it lacking.*First, it was rather repetitive. Information in the different chapters overlapped a lot.*Second, I expected more help with creating my own sketchnotes. There is room for practicing different icons and whatnot in the back, but only a few pages. I expected more examples and places to practice typography.*Third, the book was hard to follow in places. It makes good sense to write this book as a big sketch note. However some of the examples from other contributors were all over the place and hard to follow. To me this negates the point of taking notes in this fashion. If you can't make sense of them later, what's the point?*I probably would have been better off buying the workbook first, but I just didn't know. And with the big price difference (the workbook is ~$35) I started here.In general I'd say skip this and just get the workbook (though I haven't actually bought or worked through that). This is a nice compilation of examples from the author in the shape of a book though.

First of all, this is a beautiful book, having a matte(?) finish, full of illustrations, using the very medium to 'deconstruct' itself. I even love the accent color (orange) used throughout the book. Loved the guest sketch noters. Don't get the Kindle edition. Appreciate the book in its native format as the author intended.The videos were okay. I felt they added little value, as the author merely clarified the concepts in his book. Given the passion the author has for sketch-noting, I kinda expected him to burst upon the screen like those guys from the infomercials. He had a business-like demeanor in front of the camera. If there was just one chapter worth watching, I would suggest watching the segment where Mike does a sketch note in real time, listening to Mr. Mueller. Oh- the online videos were not captioned. I would suggest that Peachpit require that future video submissions have subtitling and/or captioning.I primarily bought this book to give me ideas and techniques that i can share with my students. Then, they can make meaningful connections in studying their subject matter, i.e., Math, Reading, Science, in a visual way. It's also nice to undertake some sketch-noting during those professional development workshops. This book delivers for me, full of little tips I can immediately put to use.I feel that this book was somewhat superficial. It is indeed a quick read. I would have liked more coverage on Dual-Coding Theory, for instance. Little coverage was given to speaker patterns. What about having a 'listening triage', weeding out white noise and capturing relevant ideas? What if someone in the audience has an insightful idea? A heated debate? I'm not asking for a full blown treatise; just better coverage on listening and capturing ideas quickly and effectively.Another example; I rely on sign language for communications. In a meeting, I just can't look down and start doodling (or jotting) away. I have to watch, and retain as much as I can before there's a lull in the meeting, then I furiously scribble down my notes. At least, sketching images may be an acceptable substitute in writing notes during lulls as they're quicker to make and i can get back to the presentation at hand. In this book, Mike describes a 'brain cache' area, but doesn't really explore it. I would have liked to acquire better memorization techniques so I can hold ideas until I put them to paper.Mike Rohde is correct that sketch noting is an invaluable addition to a person's toolset in acquiring, retaining, and making meaningful connections between ideas. Not only Dual Coding Theory helps us understand why we retain and make meaningful connections between ideas in a visual manner, it is also kinesiology, the very act of sketching, that helps tie it all together. Thus, sketch notes have the most value to the person who did the notes; it truly helps him/her retain and understand what was presented at that workshop, meeting, etc. Even sketch noting while digesting a heavy treatise helps an individual better grasp and utilize the ideas being learned.However, I find an odd disconnect in treating sketch notes for wide distribution via social media. Sketch notes have little utility in communicating ideas to other people who were not present at the meeting, workshop, etc. I've looked at a couple of sketch notes in the wild and really couldn't understand them. I may grasp bits and pieces, but i get the feeling that I had to be there to understand these sketch notes fully. That said, sketch notes have some utility for communicating ideas with people who actually attended the meeting, workshop, etc., but didn't do any sketch-noting.I may be missing the point, but why would sketch noters share their sketch notes on social media, when they are ill-equipped vehicles in communicating ideas? Is it because they may have some intrinsic artistic merit? Just treat sketch notes as a tool that a person can utilize in capturing and synthesizing ideas in a visual form, and not for any intrinsic artistic value they may have. Overall, a good book.

A very comprehensive service manual for the S1000 variants. It offers a nice little history of BMW bikes at the beginning, and includes an exhaustive series of repair and maintenance procedures. It lists tools required, and with plenty of pictures demonstrates the steps necessary for each procedure. It even explains the subtle differences for the procedure between the R, RR and XR bikes.This is by far, much more detailed than the BMW factory Repair and Service Data software. It covers just about every conceivable maintenance procedure and repair topic one could imagine. The only drawback is the paper is quite thin and won't hold up to rough handling in the garage,so be careful flipping those pages.All-in-all, adding this to your collection for S1000 bike repair is a no-brainer, and most likely the cheapest thing you will buy for your bike!

A must have for the do it yourselfer! Every task is rated from "easy" to "highly skilled". Not planning on tearing apart my engine though wanted much more info on my RR than owners manual. Looking forward to saving time and money changing fluids, removing wheels for new tire installs and other maintenance. Here it is; short and sweet. This book is a pleasure to READ, and "listen to" as if the guys were still on the tube and being their silly selves. They provided excellent wording for the projects. BUT, I was so disappointed in the photo presentations; tiny black and whites with no visible detail. There was a good representation of projects, but there was NO clear BIG photos of what was being done in them, as described in the text.It was great to read/"see" the guys again, but so sad to NOT SEE what they were doing in the photos.BUT, I can't wait until you get back on TV again so I can learn and laugh at the same time.

These guys are the best source for upholstery how to!

If you're a fan of the greatest D.I.Y. shows of all time, or someone with an insatiable furniture fetish, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I sleep with a copy under my pillow every night...

The text is overlapping on the kindle version. I opened it on 3 different devices and it's the same on all. We can't even read it with the text all jumbled together.

We ❤️ this book! We celebrated by using foam printmaking to make Día de los Muertos designs after learning about Posada and his Catrina/other prints. The info made Posada Elem appropriate and brought up adult issues using child language and concepts. Great for Day of the Dead fun! 💀💀💀

The illustrations in Funny Bones are so whimsical, and macabre- I love it. I purchased this for my mother, a fourth grade teacher, and she is so excited to share this with her class for Cinco de Mayo. Because of the bold illustrations and cultural story line, I believe this book is versatile for many age groups. I bought this book because it was on the New York Times Best list for Illustrations in 2015.

This is a beautifully illustrated and informative book. The material is easy to understand and yet not patronizing. The fact that the illustrations are in the style of MesoAmerican artwork just makes it more endearing to me. Explaining the evolution of Posada's skill, the techniques he learned were parts of his story I had not previously known. I look forward to getting more books by Tonatiuh to share with my family in years to come.

DT's Funny Bones was a hit at our school's family literacy night. It was an informative story that was fun to read and share with students and parents alike. It seemed everyone knew about sugar skulls but nobody knew the story of the creator, Don Lupe. Great for bilingual readers at home or in school.

This book doesn't flow well and it doesn't hold kids' attention in my experience. I appreciate the history though.
