#741,679 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I'm certainly not a chilango (a native of Mexico City), but over the past 30 years I have made about 10 trips to this extraordinary basket-case of a city, the most recent trip being December of 2011. I thoroughly enjoy visiting there, but I am not blind to its problems and dangers. In my younger days, I'd most often go there alone; but even when accompanying someone who was new to the city, except for the occasional guided tour we'd most often walk or travel by metro or cab (and, as several writers suggest, it is in walking about it that one truly gets the fullest experience of Mexico City). Thus, I like to think that my knowledge of the city's broad center (where most of these essays are set) is fairly thorough. So, reading this fine collection of essays about life in the D.F. was, for me, a rather strange experience. Very often, I found myself saying, "Yes--that indeed once was true, but now . . ."First, the reasons you, as a possible visitor to Mexico City, should consider buying this book: Ruben Gallo's introduction, which sketches out the long history of the city and then critiques the usual theorizing of the D.F.--the nostalgic lamenting of the loss of Mexico City's former graceful status of the City of Palaces--in favor of a theory arguing that, especially since the immediate aftermath of the 1521 conquest, the city has constantly been remaking itself; all of the essays in the section called "Places," which still ring true to me; the various photo-essays, in particular Francis Alys' "Ambulantes"; Alma Guillermoprieto's "Garbage" (a subject which, for fairly obvious reasons, is something of an obsession for chilangos); and Elena Poniatowska's beautifully-told "The Earthquake," which focuses solely on the story, told in their own words, of a woman who happened to be rescued from her collapsed building by her nephew, yet which somehow ends up conveying, better than just about anything about the 1985 quake that I've read, the heartbreak of those terrible days (and the years that followed). Also, students and admirers of writing about urban spaces will find much to like and learn from in all these pieces. Now the note of caution: The possible visitor needs to know that some of these pieces have become dated in their details. They do indeed give one an accurate sense of the city as I found it to be from the early-'80s to early-'90s--roughly the period that most of these pieces were written. That time, suffice it to say, was not a happy one in the life of the D.F.: air pollution so bad that the State Department classified our embassy there as a hazardous-duty post; underemployment resulting in beggars, day-laborers, vendors and street performers (and many other, less-savory characters) clogging the sidewalks and delaying traffic on the main streets; trash everywhere; all-but-denuded green spaces--including Chapultepec Park; formerly-elegant and vibrant neighborhoods gone to seed; and clearly overwhelmed city services. However, over the years since this book's publication, the city has dramatically expanded public and alternate transportation (12 Metro lines built or under construction; light-rail lines extending into the suburbs; dedicated bus lanes and, more recently, bike lanes and rent-a bike stands throughout the city's heart); air quality seems to have improved a great deal; the Centro seems to be a desirable place to live now; in general, the broad middle of the city feels much safer than just about any other big city you can think of, including many in the States. None of this is to say that Mexico City is now some sort of urban paradise; and it obviously isn't Gallo's fault that some of these pieces seem less true now than they once were. It's simply to say that the potential buyer needs to know that the city that is these essay's subject has changed fairly substantially since their publication--in some cases, clearly for the better.

This Reader contains several stories that explain the background of various landmarks in the Distrito Federal. Each chapter makes a great day read and they are well-written and pertinent, even for frequent visitors.

I have a thing for both Mexico and for non-fiction. This interesting collection of essays about D.F. satisfies my curiosity.

This is a wonderful book, I strongly recommend it.

Overall, a very good anthology of diverse material on Mexico City. The focus on just the one city--the DF--is wise and unique: many readers/books would try to encompass all of Mexico or Mexican minorities or women in Mexico or whatever have you. But by narrowing the scope via geography and openly showcasing Mexico City as a geographical unit worthy of its own anthology (which it is, certainly) this book opens up many varied aspects of the locale from foodways to politics to history. Indeed, instead of having too-narrow a focus, in fact the book is far too short to come close to cutting into the deep layers of Mexico City, though it's a fine place to start--the best place insofar as social sciences I would say. My only complaints are:1) It's already very dated: we need a new edition of this fine book for it to address today's Mexico City. I am awaiting the day when anthologies will be websites instead of books and constantly updated akin to Wikipedia or Wikitravel. In many cases, the age of this book really shows though that should not discourage anyone from reading it because it does still offer a real wealth of insight.2) The book simply should have been longer. Aside from the cost of printing a slightly larger book, I don't see any real obstacle to making it longer, either, as many course readers number over 600 pages. This one clocks less than 350 pages and there are plenty of worthwhile essays on Mexico City in the public domain--historical documents, even--so copyright isn't a viable problem. The editorial approach taken has been superb: nearly all the included material is great. However, the editor could have sourced even more material to produce a far more robust book. "Readers" really serve two purposes: to educate a seminar student or other person on the topic at hand via reading the whole damn book or, to serve as a reference book for someone interested/involved in the subject. For the latter, the more material the better.I hope for a new edition of this book soon. For now, it's still very worthwhile despite my small misgivings

Awesome book. This books paints a picture of Mexico City like no other. It's a collection of 30-some essays and reportage. Some have a historical perspective (e.g., the Metro system just after it was built), while others are very recent. This isn't a guidebook, but it will give you a better understanding of the city's underpinnings than a stack of Lonely Planets ever will. Most of the authors are Mexicans; a lot of the essays are famous in Mexico, and appearing in English for the first time. There is a level of authenticity here that is not reached by competing books (e.g., David Lida's 'First Stop in the New World' -- which is more of an American journalist's perspective on things.)The writing is exciting, artistic, and well-chosen.

The Museum of Lost Art, by Noah Charney

Review

"From the bestselling author [...] Noah Charney... A dynamic narrative... Fascinating stories... Provides a stark reminder of the fragility of the world's treasures."—ArtsBeat"Noah Charney wrote bestseller The Art of Forgery. For his new book, he returns to the art underworld and looks at work that was stolen, looted or destroyed in war. Some pieces featured here were accidentally lost, others damaged in natural disasters, and others still destroyed because of the images they carried. Most remarkable of all are the masterpieces recycled for their materials."—CreativeBloq.com"In his expansive study The Museum of Lost Art, Charney provides a survey of works that have been stolen, confiscated, obliterated, painted over, erased, buried or that perhaps never even existed. The result - appropriately - is something of a revelation."—Art Agency, Partners"Charney picks out some of the greatest lost cultural artifacts in history and tells vivid tales of their bitter ends."—Bloomberg Online"Lost art still has a key role in our culture... The were seven wonders in the ancient world. None has survived, save the great pyramids. Yet these long-vanished marvels still loom large in our cultural memory... Noah Charney curates a collection of masterpieces that, destroyed, misplace or stolen, may no longer be seen. Yet they play a crucial role in our culture... It becomes apparent that it is the very "lost-ness" of these pieces that is integral to their identity... Lost artworks belong less to our world than to the land of myth... Lost art can never disappoint... A museum of lost art would contain more masterpieces than all existing museums, this book suggests. It may sound like a sad statistic. But then you realize that the wonder that the art first inspired can still very much be found."—The Times, Saturday Review"Imagine a museum of lost art crammed with masterpieces that have, over the centuries, been looted, destroyed in war, accidentally demolished or attacked. This is the fascinating premise of a new book by the US scholar Noah Charney, published by Phaidon."—TheArtNewspaper.com"Theft. Looting. Fire. Vandalism. Acts of God. Where are Caravaggio's Nativity and Vermeer's The Concert? What happened to Van Weyden's Justice cycle? Why not bring back to life a selection of dead artworks, such as The Colossus of Rhodes?... A very enjoyable read."—MatureTimes.co.uk "Engaging, surprising, amusing and often tragic."—Brent D. Glass, Director Emeritus, National Museum of American History Smithsonian Institution"It's a beautifully illustrated guide to art, to whom, fate has often been astonishingly cruel."—The Buffalo News Online"The Museum of Lost Art carefully documents how the violence and vagaries of war, looting, accidents, vandalism and natural disasters will always wreak havoc on art?and why the protection of works against these kinds of dangers is vital. But for some artists like [Jean] Tinguely and [Heather] Benning, the destruction itself is where creation can also be found."—Economist.com"From the bestselling author of The Art of Forgery, Noah Charney, comes this fantasy art adventure, The Museum of Lost Art. This is a stroll through a museum that could never exist. It's a visit to a gallery of the 'once was', perhaps a wander through a hall of 'lost forever', and a tentative toe-dipping into an underworld of crime and seamy politics. The Museum of Lost Art has a wealth of illustrations to bring alive these curious tales. It's a fascinating and engaging read and a commentary not only on art but also on its place in civil, religious, and political society."—MostlyFood.co.uk

The one other reviewer gave this a 1 star because he said it was just re-hashing old information. I find that a misuse of this rating system and unjustly giving this great book a bad chance to sell well. It is a history book... by default it is re-telling older stories. But this book does so eloquently and combines the importance of lost art to the cultures that lost them. Maybe this other reviewer is some sort of all-knowing-lost-art-genius... but to an avid art history enthusiast like myself I found it a wonderful read which was augmented by direct visual examples of the relative works

There is a great deal of great art in the world today, but the author reminds us that many pieces of art of great renown no longer exist: theft, fire, war, accident and other calamities destroy art. The author demonstrates that an immense museum could be stocked with art that is missing and is, for the most part, unrecoverable. This is an interesting thesis and is fully explored. The only downside is that at times the book amounts to little more than a list of missing pieces of art which makes for dull reading.

Noah Charney book is a wonderful account of lost art. Exciting to read, and very informative about a real problem in the world of art. I read The Art Thief and The Art of Forgery and this was just as amazing.

It's a great read.

So fascinating! Beautifully told collection of vinegettes with beautiful prints of the related works. Deeply enjoyed this book and will look forward to many rereads in the future!

It wasn't new information,it was rehashing!

Hard to separate my awesome experience of the country in low season from the book- but I'll try.The relatively thinner book from getting a SE Asia compilation makes it FAR more approachable. The glossy outside and light weight made it very attractive to fellow travellers. I made a lot of new "friends" sitting next to me in hostels, boats down the rivers or mini buses to excursions while reading this. The color sections and photos were fantastic.with the dramatically changing landscape of Laos (dams being built) it's good to have an updated book such as this one for my trip in May.

I like their guides. This was my go to source for travel in Laos where I spent 10 days last January. When traveling alone it is important to have detailed information and guidance in a guide like this.

I love the book it is easy to read and give me lot of information for our trip...

Just what I needed

Excellent book, delivered on time.

Useful and updated tips. Bought the Kindle edition so I would have one less book to carry in my travel-light trip, but realized mid-trip that a hard-copy would be much easier to quickly thumb-through.

Best travel guide out there

Not bad, good info on Laos in general.

I loved this book. Another winner for Ms. Wylde. I have been waiting for story since Tex, and I wasn't disappointed at all. The story flows so well you won't put this book down. I will warn you after you read this book you will want more and more of Ms. Wylde's books. This story is about Janessa and Seamus. Janessa feel in love with Seamus when she was 14 years old. While she is finishing growing up Seamus has turned into a manwhore who hurts Janessa when she is finally grown and comes to claim him. This story is about the love between them and it is a beautifully written story. Enjoy it I know I did.

Janessa and Seamus! Finally. The only thing I was looking forward to as much as is poor Flicker getting a happily ever after.Glad to see Harley has plans for more Dealers in the future. Hater for this story to end. Love these charscters.

enjoyed this contiuation of this series. The story seeemed a little rushed and not guite done....but the story was great.wished we knew more about the characters everything was short and fast ...

Really didn’t like this one much, for an author I like she sure wrote a heroine who was stupid. There are always some hints in her stories that I don’t agree with but this one person did stupid after stupid. Sure hope the next book is better or I will just have to ditch this author.

I had hoped for more with Janessa and Irish. First, I can’t believe how stupid Janessa was. Especially having grown up in the life AND knowing she’s in danger.

Another winner in this series of books. Good characters and romance plus action and plenty of twists and turns. Keeps your attention.

Harley Wylde hits it out of the ballpark again! I love this series so much. I can not wait for the next eone.

I have been waiting for Seamus and Janessa’s story since they were first introduced in Dixie Reapers-Tex. Did not disappoint. Love this book series.

Early in my reading of Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods," I found myself thinking, "I should walk the Appalachian Trail!" A few chapters later, after learning of Bryson's hiking, sweating, and chafing experience, all I could think was, "Screw that. I'll stay indoors, thank you very much."I had a similar experience reading Jesse Itzler's informative, inspiring and hilarious fitness memoir, "Living with a SEAL."Itzler is a compulsively motivated human being who has achieved crazy success in entertainment, business, and fitness (to say nothing of marriage) by doing things others haven't thought of, view as contrarian or consider bat-shit insane. (is "bat-shit" hyphenated?)In LWaS, Jesse recounts the intense, month-long training hell he brought on himself by inviting a real-life Navy SEAL to live with him and his family. Early in the book I was thinking, "...maybe I should turn up the heat on my workouts and push the limits of my mind and body." Then I read about Jesse's torn muscles, hypothermia and bloody nuts (yes, those kind of nuts), and thought, "naaahhh."Indeed, Jesse holds back none of the grueling details involved in training with one of the world's most elite warriors and the marital complexities that arise when you host him in your family's apartment.Like SEAL, Jesse has one speed: 110% x 24 x 7. He's also a little bat-shit insane and a really funny writer. If you're into fitness and/or crazy people, you'll love Living with a SEAL.

First, the negative. I'm not crazy about Itzler's writing style. He tries too hard to be funny and a lot of the attempted humor doesn't work for me. But here is what I DO like about Itzler's perspective in this book: like the rest of us, Jesse is clearly, joyfully in awe of David Goggins.I'm a pretty crappy long distance runner, and when I first heard of Goggins I found it impossible to process his list of achievements. This guy makes the runners I know and admire seem as inept as I am. Reading his list of accomplishments is more like reading about a super hero than about an athlete. After a while it all runs together, just one jaw dropper after another. Any mere mortal would probably spend the rest of his life crowing about it if he had done even one of the things Goggins has done. Instead of bragging, David Goggins just moves on to the next challenge and crushed it (usually as part of a fundraising benefit for good causes). It is hard to conceive of anyone having this combination of strength, confidence, endurance, and patience. The book does humanize Goggins. He does share some of the flaws of lesser men. He is profane, he can be moody and unfriendly, and he carries a darkness wirh him. This isn't Superman. This is a human being, like anyone else, who just happens to be capable of super feats. On his Instagram page, David has made reference to a book he is writing. I'll buy it the day it is published. In the meantime, this book will do. Jesse Itzler is a David Goggins fan, like many of us. He just happens to be a fan who's life was transformed over a month he spent with the SEAL himself. The book is imperfect, but anyone who admires David Goggins should read it.

I've been working a lot on "mindset" this year. My biggest takeaway was the idea that when you think you're done, you're not. I've applied this philosophy to my workouts and have been striving to do 40% more reps, reminding myself that although I may feel done physically, that's just my mind telling me to stop. It works! This book is hilarious, but beware the bad language. I didn't realize my daughter was looking over my shoulder and I heard "mommy, is that book real?" Me: Yes. "Mommy, what's a motherf***er?"

After reading David Goggins' book (the SEAL who is talked about in this book), this book is very irritating. Calling David Goggins' "SEAL" for the whole story is frustrating. Also, after reading David Goggins' book and listening to him speak on podcasts, some of the things the author quotes him saying and doing are absolutely not Goggins' style, which leads to me believe an ample amount of artistic license was used here. It was great to read about the author's insane fitness experiment though. It would have been just and cool without the exaggeration.

I loved this book! Read it in less than 2 days then bought a copy for my brother-in-law. I've read my fair share of self-help, improve yourself books... but this one got me to take action. Seriously... around chapter 4 I put the book down and went for a 4 mile run. That may not seem like a big deal, but I hadn't been out for a run in well over a year!My take away from the book - "What you think you're capable of is actually only about 40% of what you are truly capable of" (paraphrasing).

Reading this is like living with the most motivational human alive. No self help book out there has done for me what this book has given me. There is no preaching, and no self-help talk. NONE. There is a "just do it" attitude and they sure do it amids blood, sweat, freezing temperatures, lack of sleep, hectic schedule, anywhere and everywhere. No if or buts, "Motherf..." lol. I had to add that in. The guy curses like a sailor, but it's very fitting given the extreme lengths they go.. In the end even the author ends up talking like a sailor. Fun and incredibly inspiring. HIghly recommended.

When I saw the blurb for The Age of Misadventure I was really looking forward to reading about the adventures of these women. Sadly I wasn’t for me. I expected it to be a humourous tale but didn't find it as funny as I'd hoped.Georgie had a need to help and take care of people and did so whether they wanted her to or not. Georgie insisted on getting her sister out of town after learning a gangster was after her. This man had worked with her husband in a dicey business deal and was owed money that he was trying to collect. Her sister loved her husband deeply and didn't care what shady deals he was involved in. Actually, getting out of town wasn't a bad idea. Georgie's daughter and aunt were part of the group leaving town. Her daughter was on her way to live with her new boyfriend and wasn't happy that the other women were going with her. Especially her mother. What young woman wants her mother helping (interfering) with her life? I found Georgie's elderly aunt's (Nanny) antics more sad than amusing. She needed a lot more care than Georgie could give her.Two of the characters were particularly irritating when they were in hiding. Both Georgie and Bonnie left the house at different times even though they knew better. By this time Jade was with her boyfriend but any time she was with her mother (Georgie) she acted like a grumpy teenager telling her mother to stay out of her life. I didn't like Nanny at all. I couldn't have put up with her. It was funny that she asked for a Guinness so often. Once she got it, she was content. While the women had quite an adventure hiding from the gangster, I found the middle of the story slow moving. Then it got really exciting toward the end.The good thing about opinions though is that not everyone has the same ones, so this book will really catch the attention of many readers. All that being said, it was a good book.I received this book from NetGalley.

This was the first book I read by Judy Leigh. I loved her writing style, her characters and the story. I thought this was my kind of book from the cover and I am so happy that I have found a new (to-me) wonderful author.I adore stories with various ages of characters, especially if the story has a character of the older generation. This book has people with ages varying from 21 to 88 years old. I am so happy when an older person is valued and cared for by others and when it is such an important part of the plot of the story. The story had me interested from the very beginning and kept me involved until it ended. The book was funny, intense and heartwarming. At the beginning of the book, you know the characters on their surface; Georgie - a divorced 55 year old woman still unhappy about the end of her marriage and a bit stuck in her daily rut, Jade (Georgie’s daughter) - a young woman trying to be independent and pry herself away from her mother’s constant watching eyes, Bonnie (Georgie’s sister) - a vulnerable, kind woman being used by her no-good husband, and Nanny Basham (Georgie and Bonnie’s aunt) - an older woman of 88 years that is going day to day, surviving but not living anymore. As the story progress, the characters become very multilayered and just as in real life, not what they seemed to be at the surface.Georgie is the ever giving overseer of her loved ones, running herself ragged trying to be all to everyone, usually putting her own needs last. When Bonnie’s no-good husband’s latest deal goes sour, Georgie organizes a trip to give Bonnie some distance and the fact that it coincides with Jade’s moving to live with her boyfriend in a new area, all the better.Unfortunately, the trouble follows them and a simple “girl’s trip” turns into so much more. All four woman grow in ways unseen before this trip. All four were strong before, but situations occur that make their strength come out full force. This book was such an enjoyable journey. I am so happy to have found this author and this book.I want to thank Avon Books UK, the author, and NetGalley.com for allowing me to read the ARC of this book. I hope in writing this review other readers will pick up this book to read.

THE AGE OF MISADVENTURE by Judy Leigh is a madcap adventure that made me laugh, made me tear up, and infuriated me at one point, but most of all it entertained me from start to finish.Georgie Turner has managed well on her own ever since her divorce and she doesn't need romance in her life. She has her own home, a successful business, and she adores the women in her life - her daughter Jade, her sister Bonnie, and her old Aunt Nan. But Jade is getting older and has fallen in love and wants Georgie to stop smothering her, Bonnie is a trophy wife to a crook, and Nan seems to be fading away before her eyes. When Bonnie's husband gets himself into trouble with a gangster and cheats on Bonnie again, Georgie sees the chance to whisk all of the people who matter the most to her away until the dust settles and Bonnie is no longer in danger, but things certainly do not always go to plan. But maybe these women will find their inner strength and forge a closer bond somewhere along the way. This book worked well for me and the characters were all unique and engaging although I have to say that Nan was by far my favourite - she made me laugh and she made me sad and there was never a dull moment with old Nan. Georgie is a more complicated character and there were times where I was completely on Jade's side and could see how overprotective Georgie could be, but I'm also a mum who would do anything to protect her kids so I could understand it a little too. Bonnie drove me nuts! There is plenty of ups and downs, twists and turns, which makes this story flow well from start to finish and I fully enjoyed THE AGE OF MISADVENTURE by Judy Leigh.*I voluntarily reviewed this book from the Publisher
