MJ's previous book was an instant classic and exposed a lot of truths about entrepreneurship and the unhappy state of modern society in general. This book tackles many of the the same ideas from a different more in-depth angle, and takes it to another level for several reasons. For starters, it is side-splittingly, roll-on-the-floor, unrelentingly hilarious and entertaining (at least to my mind). To me, almost every single page is full of funny anecdotes and analogies. Listening to the Audible version of this is better than listening to a good HBO stage comedian, and far more useful. Second, the book makes a concerted effort to address the psychological barriers that I've come to believe are the biggest obstacles to entrepreneurship. As the Romans (apparently) understood, a proper slave doesn't need chains to remain in bondage...once conditioned, a person's attitudes and beliefs are far more effective tools of servitude. This applies not only to the poor, but to many of us who have successfully navigated years of 'success' milestones, and yet found themselves with a career environment that has not held up its end of the bargain. That's the reason for the title "Unscripted", to re-engineer years of ingrained and indoctrinated beliefs that won't really serve your dreams of success and freedom. Finally, this book is impressively in-depth and detailed. It doesn't (and can't) give you a specific formula for a successful business for your situation. But it works from a number of angles, over and over, chipping away at the roadblocks that will snare most of us who decide to go for something more. In that sense its a useful reference with some meaningful ideas and approaches to tackle challenges, many of which are not in The Millionaire Fastlane.If you're a cozy, happily employed person who is deeply satisfied with your weekend lifestyle, then this book is absolutely not for you. In fact, run away! Its only going to cause you trouble. But if you find yourself among the discontented 70%, stuck in traffic and depressed, profoundly disillusioned with your own past choices; pay close attention. Whining about the traps of our modern society will get you nowhere, and the true cause of your ills is not really the common scapegoats: politics, racial or class issues (although they have their moments). It's your mental framework and a lack of understanding of and experience with entrepreneurship. The truth is that America can be a truly great country for anyone, but its rewards mercilessly and relentlessly go to those entrepreneurs who deliver relative value. Provide real value to others and whatever limits you presume exist in your life (sex, age, race, upbringing, education) will rapidly vanish. In that sense, its a real hopeful step forward and a useful tool for many of us.Absolutely highly recommended, he's now among my favorite authors.UPDATE: I've now completed the book 3 times, and it only gets better. Each time I go through it I realize there are some useful pearls of wisdom in there that I had grasped conceptually but not completely faced (about myself). Some people might regard the material in this book as shocking. But what's really shocking is that here in the 'Land of Opportunity' after years and years of college and real world experience, this is not common wisdom. You don't hear this material anywhere. It should be Business 101, or Prosperity 101, Life 101.

If you had the choice between purchasing one of the popular financial “guru’s” books or this book Unscripted which would you choose? Not having read the authors previous book you might assume the popular “guru” book is a no brainer right? As wise ole Yoda said “Judge me by my size, do you?” For me and those who have read the author’s previous book the answer is clear – buy, read and most importantly apply the framework provided in Unscripted! This book is not only huge in size (416 pages) but more importantly it is huge in value it can provide to you and your future of breaking free of the “scripted” life. This isn’t a feel good book or “here is the 30 steps you need to do to become a millionaire and work from the beach when you want to” book. This is a book that helps you see how our life has often become one big “scripted” voluntary slavery where we work all week for two days off with a mountain of debt over our heads. Realizing our current reality is worth the price of the book alone but it goes on to showing you the framework to break free and lead an “unscripted” life. There is so many high value wisdom nuggets provided in this book but some of my favorites are:• The Careless Whispers from you Soul• Action faking vs action taking• Sunday evening is the ultimate test if you are leading a scripted life – how do you feel about going back to work Monday morning?• Don’t be a “Time Prostitute” – time is scarce money is not!• Don’t be part of the “herd” headed to slaughter!• Hyperreality and observational bias (Jedi Mind Tricks)• Being a producer vs consumer – “you can’t be owned by what you own”• The “pain of discipline or the pain of regret”• Micro-processes + macro-processes = success – no silver bullets just small habits focused• There are no shortcuts!• The “event” is the result of the “process”• Have a growth mindset• The Kaizen Principle• Getting rich isn’t done by desiring wealth it is in providing “perceived value” to others• “Perceived Value vs Actual Value”• “Luck vs Probability” and the “Gumball Machine” Brilliant analogy!• Investing and all the popular falsies/scams• Cancer Corollary – “do I have something I want and what will it cost me”• Autonomy (control) as the number one reason for our happiness! This is again worth the price of the book 10x over!• “How to create a business that changes your life” this is the framework!• The “CENTS” commandments again worth the price of admission!• “Expected Value” – holy cow batman this is good stuff!• From Process to Productocracy!• Best (13) Execution practices!• Lifetime Passive Income!• “The last business ever – if you want”Unscripted is a book that I read slowly because it is so jammed packed with valuable wisdom that you need to process. It is a book that I will re-read many times over taking more notes and putting actionable habits that move my life from the Scripted to the Unscripted! This is the one book I will give to all my kids and close friends!

If you want more out of your life, but feel trapped or that you can't succeed no matter how much you try, this book may just hold the breakthrough you've been looking for. There is no "formula" or "secret" that is revealed in the book - just a sobering and analytical look at the way societal norms and pressures can be affecting you without you even knowing it. Before you can release yourself from these "invisible chains" (the script), you must first make them visible. As the book keeps reminding you..if you want the same results as everyone else around you living a "normal life", then keep doing what you (and everyone else) is doing. If you want more, you are going to have to write your own script and find your own way to get there. This book serves as a guide to do exactly that.

"Millionare's fastlane" book was a fun read, but I decided to read this one as well.It's poorly written, repetitive, and not a lot of useful info here.Author contradicts himself quite a lot in the book without realizing it. Oh - and guess what he is doing with his millions? The slowlane. Investing it safe and slow. So it's kinda hypocritical.Overall - this is more INSPIRATIONAL then PRACTICAL, so instead of 400 pages of ramblings - it could've been all said and done in 20-30 pages on a high level, but the author has an ego that shines through the whole book.I would not recommend this book to anyone, really. Watch a summary on youtube in 10 minutes and you'll be better off.

Misconceptions abound in the public perception of corruption in Africa. Tom Burgis’ incisive new analysis of corruption on the continent, The Looting Machine, dispels these dangerous myths.For starters, corruption is mistakenly believed to reign supreme in every country on the African continent. (There are 48 nations in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a combined population of more than 800 million.) Of course, it’s true that some African countries rank very low on Transparency International’s “Corruption Perceptions Index” (CPI) — after all, Somalia merits the very lowest score, with Sudan and South Sudan not far above it — but only Eritrea and Guinea-Bissau rank at all close to them. In between them are many other countries: Middle Eastern, Central Asian, Caribbean, South Asian. And three Sub-Saharan African nations rank in the top third of the 175 countries in the CPI: Lesotho, Namibia, and Rwanda, with Ghana close behind. Ghana scores better than Greece, Italy, and several other European nations.Second, corruption in Africa is viewed as intractable. It’s widely believed that nothing can be done about it. Nonsense! One of the largest and most potent sources of the cash that fuels corruption is foreign aid. Institutions like the World Bank, USAID, and other national and international agencies direct most, if not all, their support to governments. This, despite the obvious evidence on the ground that a huge proportion of this aid goes straight into the pockets of the ruling elites. If foreign aid were doled out more selectively to community-based organizations, local agencies, and NGOs with grassroots operations, the picture might be very different. As things stand, only a trickle of foreign aid gets to the people who need it most: the poor.Lastly, and most significantly, too many observers characterize African corruption as a uniquely African phenomenon that grows out of ethnic rivalries and the failure of European colonists to establish stable native governments. Those factors, while present, are only part of the story. Equally, if not more, consequential is the role of foreign investment — principally from China, the US, and Western Europe — in exploiting the continent’s abundant resources, often paying through the nose for the privilege. Corruption is a two-way street: briber and bribee need each other. And those Western investors include some of the world’s biggest US- and European-based multinational corporations — most prominently, Big Oil and the major mining companies. Chinese companies are even worse because they’re not constrained by legal restrictions at home. Prominent foreign aid cheerleaders like Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University do the African people no favors by advocating huge increases in official aid, rationalizing that some of it will actually do good. Just ask the first ten Africans you meet on the street in Lagos or Nairobi or Luanda. Unless you happen to run into a member of the privileged elite, you’ll get an earful about Western-enabled corruption.The Looting Machine spotlights this two-way street, with an emphasis on commerce. The role of foreign aid receives little attention. The principal source of corruption in Africa, Burgis contends again and again, is its wealth of natural resources: oil, gas, gold, diamonds, copper, iron, and many other materials essential to the rich nations’ consumer economies. Citing an analysis by McKinsey, he reports that “69 percent of people in extreme poverty live in countries where oil, gas, and minerals play a dominant role in the economy and that average incomes in those countries are overwhelmingly below the global average.” This is one of the most tragic consequences of what economists refer to as the “resource curse.” Burgis asserts that “An economy based on a central pot of resource revenue is a recipe for ‘big man’ politics.”It’s no accident that the resource curse finds its fullest expression in Africa: the continent accounts for 13 percent of the world’s population and just 2 percent of its cumulative gross domestic product, but it is the repository of 15 percent of the planet’s crude oil reserves, 40 percent of its gold, and 80 percent of its platinum — and that is probably an underestimate.”The scope of the corruption this cornucopia of resources makes possible is difficult to comprehend. For example, “When the International Monetary Fund examined Angola’s national accounts in 2011, it found that between 2007 and 2010 $32 billion had gone missing.” That’s billion with a “B.” And this, in a country of just 21 million people — a population roughly equivalent to that of Sao Paulo, Seoul, or Mumbai.If you want to gain perspective on poverty, war, and corruption in Africa, read this book.The emphasis in The Looting Machine is on those countries Burgis knows well: Angola, Nigeria, Congo, with less intensive reporting from several other nations.Tom Burgis has worked for the Financial Times in Africa since 2006, covering business, politics, corruption, and conflict. Author provides interesting first hand information of corporateexecutives, government personnel and middle men/women involved in corruption of contractsfor resources between governments, companies and their cronies and the devastation theywreak with looting the masses in African countries. Although with his journalism backgroundhe is no sociologist or political scientist, he tries to draw parallels between countries onthe strategies and dynamics that maintain the hoarding of wealth to the detriment of themajority who produce it.

This book is slightly challenging, meanders somewhat, but is endlessly fascinating. I gave it 4 stars because I felt that the abundance of information made it fascinating and kept me reading. But it could stand some improvement to its structure and organization. To me though, the bottom line is that, if you tire of supporting charities and causes that support the African peoples and nations and wonder why things don't seem to improve for African nations like they have for so many Asian nations, this will be a great starting place to acquire keen insight.

Tom Burgis thoroughly describes how the Dutch disease or resource curse has undermined many Africa’s “resource-rich” countries that often are disproportionately dependent on the extraction and export of oil, gas, and minerals for their revenue mix. Mr. Burgis adds that both corruption and ethnic violence can compound the misery that the Dutch disease generates in these “resource-rich” countries.In a nutshell, the resource curse sets in a cycle of economic addiction through an upward revaluation of the currency in “resource-rich” countries. The decay of the local manufacturing and agriculture sectors that results from their non-competitiveness in the global economy increases the dependency of the “addicted” countries on natural resources. The well-connected local elite monopolizes the “economic rent” that the resources business generates, creating an apartheid between them and the rest of the population. This looting machine cannot work properly without the well-understood complicity of foreign governments and companies eager to put their hands on this bounty, preferably on the cheap. China has not many lessons of morality to receive from the West that too often shines through both its hypocrisy and cynicism. Furthermore, while the resources business is capital-intensive, it is not labor-intensive. Finally, any infrastructure that pre-existed the extraction and export of these raw materials gets neglected in the process.To his credit, Mr. Burgis is not all gloom and doom about the future of Africa. The author highlights that for all their shortcomings, South Africa and Botswana have developed a viable manufacturing sector within their borders. These exceptions prove the rule that the Dutch disease blocks the path to industrialization across Africa, resulting in the specialization of many Africa’s “resource-rich” countries in remaining poor.

The Looting Machine is the best explaination for current income disparencys in many of the African counties he covers. He does a good job of putting everything in perspective and demonstrating how corruption has gutted the continent.

Danica Rosić was seemingly ashamed of her daughter’s artistic endeavors, and yet when she died, Abramović discovered that she had stashed away newspaper clippings about her performances—holey clippings where she had carefully cut out her daughter’s often nude (and sometimes mutilated) visage. Its a well written memoir, takes you in from the first pages. A lot of sad and horrible things happened to her and shaped her art and love realtionships, but theres also humor. Marina Abramovic is certainly one of those who lived fully. I liked her text also because it really makes you feel like you know her personaly, and also know better about this form of art, this type of artistic market and Yugoslavia. It was intersting to get to know that in Yougoslavia "second hand communism country", as Abramovic names it they had cafeterias with capuccino, modern art exhibitions, sex in cinemas, access to Kafka and even strip clubs. They never had it in so called "first-hand communism" version in Russia!I also like the end of the book, it ends like alsmost every other modern alternative festival movie - with nothing...author just went for a swim and felt good.

I enjoyed the first half of this book. Abramovic writes in a very direct and frank manner that lends itself well to constructing a compelling narrative. She's a bit "off the wall" sometimes, but I even enjoyed this aspect and learning of a perspective so different from my own. It was fascinating to learn about her different pieces and the challenges and lessons learned through execution.My issue with this book is Abromovic's apparent lack of knowledge of Christopher Columbus and the details of his most famed expedition in which he failed to reach Asia. In the book, she says "this is why I love the story of Christopher Columbus-Columbus, who was sent by the queen of Spain to discover a different way to go to India, who was given a crew of convicts, because everybody was convinced the earth was flat and you would fall off the edge if you sailed across the Atlantic." I was completely horrified by her admiration of a man who perpetrated genocide. For someone who has travelled the world and studied various different cultures (as detailed in the book), I was shocked at this apparent level of ignorance of the atrocities committed by Christopher Columbus on his expeditions to the Americas. It forced me to question her cultural sensitivity and knowledge, which is very disappointing and disheartening. I don't know if I can continue the book as I now have serious doubts of the reliability of Abramovic as a narrator.(Also, Columbus and his crew would not have feared falling off the edge of the earth as if was common knowledge at this point in history that the earth is spherical. A much more minor issue.)

Marina Abramovic is the single most courageous person in the world. Fact. Her story is art and art is her story. She is amazingly talented and immeasurably deep. Her story, her life, her vision, and her art will change your life.

I was hoping for a bit more about the thought and reasoning behind the discussed pieces. Not a treatise on the work, but how she came to decide the implementation of any of the pieces, the way they were done and choices made, certainly were filtered and defined through who she is, and are at least partly biographical. There is definitely some of that,but with more, it would have been 5*.

One of my favorite artists tell it like it is. An excellent read for anyone who admires courage and dares to defy preconceived notions about artists who happen to be women. Bravo!

Marina Abramovic is an amazing artist and I thoroughly enjoyed the book, though I do understand that some readers may be put off by her very direct and occasionally self-indulgent style of writing. The book does provide a great deal of personal background to the life and work of an exceptional woman.

Now one of my favorite books. Dynamic, juicy, and so very human. Thank you, MA, for sharing your story.

Marina is a classic person for our times.

Santa was kind enough to leave this cookbook under my Christmas tree this year and I was delighted!Robin Ellis is a wonderful actor and story teller as well as a cook, so I immediately sat down for a cozy winter's read that became a journey to the south of France and the Mediterranean way of eating. I have tried some of the recipes that Ellis has posted on his blog and they have always turned out delicious! I can't wait to try some of these. This book, although aimed at people with diabetes, is a well rounded cookbook that everyone can use. Well written and nicely illustrated.

Hard cover=This was a bit disappointing. Thought it was the hard copy of the soft cover but this one was large ptrint and none of the photos or illustrations that are in the soft cover version. I ended up giving this book to our senior community center.Soft cover=Delightful illustrations and wonderful simple recipes. All items are fresh and most picked from garden or purchased at market in the village in southern France. I agree with reviewer that said the writer is so personable you feel as if you know him.

Who would like to be Robin Ellis (Poldark himself)? Living in the beautiful countryside in the south of France, he has made a great cookbook for the the novice cook...or even a very experienced one. Taste and simplicity encourage the reader with fresh and flavorful recipes. They sound good. Have tried several already and they taste great too. Nice to have the help to get healthier and maybe a little lighter too. Arrived quickly and in great shape from the seller.

What a fabulous book! The Mediterranan-style recipes are easy, fast, and healthy - and they taste terrific! Robin Ellis, who lives on South France, makes keeping a low sugar diet a breeze, with fresh ingredients that make your mouth water. You will find a recipe for nearly anything you need: soups, appetizers,fish, poultry, and more!! I highly recommend this book to those who love to eat good food but need to control their diet. You won't sacrifice on taste!!

Since Ellis is a type-2 diabetic, he has put a lot of creativity in his recipes. He helps the rest of us get excited about eating good, healthy meals. I have tried many of his receipes and have found them easy to make and delicious to eat. If you are fighting Type-2 Diabetes, this cookbook is worth having. I can't wait for his next one to come out.

The recipes really are excellent. Special enough to serve company. However, diabetics need clear information on carbs, fats, etc. these are not provided. Perhaps this is only true of the kindle version, but it is a shame.

Very approachable. The recipes are easy and "pay off" quickly. There are not a lot of steps to do before you have you meal ready to eat. I am however, from California and my taste buds are used to a bit more action. These are nice, tidy and respectful dishes. The attention to the dietary constraints is fantastic. My tastes are not this _refined_
