The tone of this book is revealed early when the author describes his childhood fascination with what he considers science and science fiction. He wants a drink to give him superpowers, and his friend convinces him that he has one.Now everyone (yes, including me) has believe foolish things at times without thinking them through, what's significant is this is the author's starting point. I would have expected tales of building crystal radios and reading classic science fiction, sending up rockets, learning chemistry, observing nature; and of using observation and theory to come to deeper understanding of speculative fiction.Instead, this book discusses almost all popular comic book and space opera stories, rarely anything without pictures; the kind of thing that many people call "science fiction." I happen to like comic books and well-made space operas, but I never confuse them with serious science fiction.The problem with trying to explain the science behind, say, Spiderman or Guardians of the Galaxy, is there is no consistent fictional phenomena to explain. The writers of these entertainments made stuff up as they go along for the convenience of the plot, not within a coherent or even possible context.Despite this problem, a competent scientist could extract some entertaining lessons from comic books and comic book movies. However, this author is not a scientists. He bases his explanations on popular science writing only a level or two above the comic book. Those explanations are often entertaining, if seldom enlightening, but the summaries in this book are stilted and boring.If you are looking for interesting science or speculation inspired by real science fiction, look elsewhere. If you want your comic books explained to you by someone who reads Gizmodo but lacks its flair, be my guest.

Interestingly shelved by me as literary, nonfiction and sf, at the same time, this book looks at the history, progress and present of science fiction, affecting science in our civilisations. And perhaps at its future. We can't be sure. Things change.From ancients who looked at the moon and made up stories, to 2001 A Space Odyssey, and various stops in between, we get a lot of namechecks and some revisiting of tales. They are somewhat jumbled, though, apparently random titles of books and films on a particular topic, not necessarily in date order. I am also a bit peeved that every four or five page chapter has one or two pages of quotes at the start. Many of these quotes are from Stanley Kubrick or Joss Whedon.No mention that I saw of Arthur C Clarke's inventing telecommunication satellites in geosychronous orbits. For that the book loses a star.In the chapter headed Jacking In, about The Matrix or Ready Player One immersion in an alternate reality, we start with several quotes from Ready Player One (in which the hero does not jack in). No quote from Neuromancer, which invented the term, and no description of what is physically involved in that book; it was namechecked in an earlier section on cyberpunk. This leads me to suspect that the author hasn't read Neuromancer. Nor Snow Crash.Proofreaders, please correct the spelling of the woefully underused Ursula K Le Guin. Apart from herself and Mary Shelley, I just plain didn't see many women authors. Anne McCaffrey had genetically modified the native fire lizards of Pern into fire-breathing dragons to aid human partners as telepathic fighters; no mention. Nor is she in the section on cyborgs and bionics; The Ship Who Sang gave a person born with severe disability the chance to live in control of a spacecraft, published in short stories 1961 - 1969 and as a book in 1969. While we are not there yet, space travel gave us telemetrics, and the late Prof Stephen Hawking controlled far more from his wheelchair than people did in 1969. JK Rowling gets a glance with one quote about long life and her magic flying car.The author has assembled a lot of material on various SF and philosophical topics including alternate reality, time travel, the world's end, space travel. He sounds enthusiastic and leans more on philosophy than action. No Warlords of Mars, more about The War of the Worlds reflecting the barbarity of colonisation. SF fans will be interested; but then, they'll have read the books and seen the films. So I am not sure at whom this work is aimed. Maybe at a new generation turning away from the internet for a moment to discover how we got to here.The book is crying out for an index, and there may be one in the final version. Lacking this in my ARC, I was unable to count easily how many women's names featured. I counted the quotes instead: 40 chapters, each prefaced by three to five quotes from anyone from HG Wells to Carl Sagan to Tim Goodman to Robert Oppenheimer to Kiera Knightley. Five women were quoted.I downloaded an e-ARC from Net Galley. This is an unbiased review.

We enjoy the fidelity of this atlas series. Much of Utah is not visible from the interstates. If you get off the beaten path, unfortunately, your phone will be without a signal to download maps, and often GPS devices do not have the fidelity needed to explore.We keep this map in our 4x4 vehicle for emergencies and use it when planning camping trips. Each section has highlights of local attractions, often not found listed elsewhere. The technical maps include a fidelity of forest service roads and paths most cars would struggle to navigate.We discovered several paths between Nevada and Utah we did not know existed and exploring them leads to the breathtaking backcountry.I would recommend it to anyone who...- Owns an RV / Travel Trailer and is wanting to find amazing Bureau of Land Management spots.- Anyone with a 4x4 looking for new challenges- Bugout Path Planning folks- Any map lovers seeking a fidelity and accuracy rarely found in the modern landscape of atlases

I love these maps and I have found no better on a state by state basis out there. These even show hiking trails (though it's a little large to be taking on a backpacking trip). This map shows in great detail even general city roads.

Great for Utah road trips so you can see all the scenic byways and highways. Even shows dirt roads and tells you where you need 4 WD and where not. Pages are much bigger scale than any state map or national atlas so it makes it easier to plan trips. (I know I use Google maps for that, too, but sometimes you want to see your routes on a bigger scale.)

My second time purchasing this atlas. Have to have one in each car because we like to go on spontaneous adventures and often find ourself with no Internet connection and wanting to have a better understanding of the roads out in the desert.

Great map, seem to find it everywhere near the parks in Utah. Used to having cell service so wasnt sure if I needed it, but a shockingly high amount of Utah has no service so used it a lot more than expected. Appreciated the details, esp the trails.

Accurate, filled with lots of useful info for travel, camp, recreation or points of interest, I highly recommend these state

This atlas is very easy to read and great for determining where public land, state and national parks, etc. are located.

Loveeeee this book. Mahto does an incredible job at breaking down the science behind skincare without missing important information. She also writes it in a user friendly approach - I learned so much, but never felt like I was getting lost. She divided the book into chapters based on skin concerns, so it's very easy to go back through your reading and check in on current skin concerns you might have. I can't recommend the book enough! My only qualm is that she rarely cites any sources in her book, which is confusing to me since it's so scientifically focused. Still worth it, though!

Ok i like how the books breaks down the skin anatomy in an easy language for everyone ,, but there are so many mistakes i feel like the Dr should update some of her information,, like using physical exfoliants for people with rosacea, applying eyecream on the lids directly, recommending foaming cleaners which are very harsh and drying regardless what skin type you have.

This book is a must have for any Esthetician or for anyone really. I love how the book breaks it down. It goes over how the skin works, what hormones do to the skin, and different skin care problems and how to fix them. It gives you actual options that actually work for your problems. I have recommended this book to all my other Esthetician’s. It is worth the buy. For reals. BUY IT!!

I found this book to be one of the best! The recipes are easy to follow, use readily available ingredients, and there are choices for main entrees that will satisfy anyone, even vegetarians and dieters. The dessert recipes sound great too though I have not had an opportunity to use them yet.

No photographs of the dishes. I like to see what a meal is supposed to look like. Otherwise quite okay

I've highlighted all but a few of these recipes. The recipes include the three main things I look for: healthy, easy, and delicious. Almost all use fresh vegetables.

This book has recipes that were new to me with easy to find ingredients and understandable instructions. One pot simplicity will be a go-to book for busy days and pot luck get-togethers in my future.

Cosmetics, toiletries and personal care products do not require FDA approval before they are sold to the public. A harmful product can only be removed from the market if the FDA can prove in a court of law that the product is harmful, improperly labeled or violates the law. Most products are labeled to "sell" rather than to provide accurate information about the product. Terms like natural and hypoallergenic do not have official definitions, so the manufacturers can use them to mean anything they want. This book, DYING TO LOOK GOOD, is truly a life saver. It gets right to the point, without a lot of unnecessary verbiage. The title tells it all. Our cosmetics (like a lot of other modern day products) are killing us--slowly, but surely. Unless we individually take responsibility and clean up our own corner of Mother Earth, we will need to pay the consequences of our own poor choices. Those consequences can only be a decrease in our quality of life.I was quite surprised by the review written by "A reader from Colorado." She said "The biggest misleading part is that there is no word about the CIR being an industry agent of the CTFA, . . . This is clearly not true, as on page 14 of DYING TO LOOK GOOD, it very plainly states that The Cosmetic Ingredients Review (CIR) was established in 1976 by the Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA). I felt that the reader's other issues were equally ill founded.I personally like this book a lot. Five stars worth! This book fills a need in my life. I now have a compact reference to take with me when I shop for cosmetics which gives objective information about numerous ingredients. It not only tells me what the FDA and CIR say about their safety, but more importantly, gives an independent evaluation of safety, revealing that many ingredients which the FDA and CIR say are safe are in fact really harmful--or at least questionable.This book is not something you pick up to while away an afternoon. It is a useful reference to be carried with you to help you make wise choices.

After a cancer scare, I purchased Dr. Farlow's Book, "Food Additives: A Shopper's Guide to What's Safe & What's Not". While striving to adopt a healthier lifestyle through proper nutrition, this proved an invaluable pocket reference. When her recent book came out, I purchased it looking once again to receive additional guidance from a trusted friend. I was NOT disappointed. Although I am now very aware of the harmful effects of food additives, I never thought that everyday items such as soap, shampoo, deodorant and toothpaste could be adversely affecting my body as well. As with Dr. Farlow's first book, I really appreciate how easy this book is to carry with me and use as I shop. Now I can be sure the products I buy are safe products for me to use. Thank you Dr. Farlow. Keep up the great work!

I found this book to be very useful. I've always wondered about the ingredients on the labels of cosmetics and personal care products, but I never knew where to look to find out what they meant and if they were safe. It's really helped me to shop for safer products for my family and myself. I've had sensitive skin all my life, but it's especially important for me to know what's in the products I buy now because I have two small children who inherited my sensitive skin. I want to be sure that what I'm putting on them is safe and not harming them. This book helps me do that!

I grew up reading science fiction. Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, L. Ron Hubbard, Orson Scott Card, Michael Crichton… In fact, I read every science fiction book I could find in our small-town library. Literally every single one until they ran out. Sadly, life went on…I grew up, finished college, got a job, read other things. It was only recently that I returned to the genre with this novel: Seed, by Michael Edelson.I could not have chosen a better title to come home to.The protagonist is a young military man in the US Army—somewhat disgruntled and riding out a lousy assignment with as much dignity and grace as he can muster. When he wakes up in a strange jungle compound, trapped with a bunch of civilians by an impenetrable barrier, he rises to the challenge with intelligence and honor, despite wishing he could just keep his head down and stay out of trouble. He’s not trying to be a hero. He’s just trying to do the right thing—which is exactly what makes him so dang heroic.He soon builds around himself an entire team of kick-butt men and women—my favorite kind of story—dedicated to unraveling the mystery while forced to navigate the perils of high-stress human interaction. (Thank you by the way, Mr. Edelson, for not relegating the fairer sex to the damsel department.) All of the characters are well-developed, each with his or her own distinct personality, both brilliant and flawed in unique and subtle ways.Unlike some science fiction, which can start to feel like a doomsday proclamation masquerading as a novel, Seed is driven first and foremost by its entertainment value. It is a story—with a strong hero, a suspenseful plot, and tension that builds into the kind of profoundly satisfying, fingernail-biting angst that will keep you turning the pages until the end.It kept me up at night, reading far later than I should have. It made me laugh. It made me worry. It made me tear up more than once. It made me angry, and then it sweet-talked its way back into my good graces. It’s that kind of book.I paid full price for this one, based on the sample. It was worth every penny.

I heard about this book via word-of-mouth. Had to pick up a copy to satiate my curiosity. I have to say - I am so happy I did.This book tells its story from a unique angle. Certainly the first chapter is a great introduction to the character of Alex Meyer before the main plot really begins. As a narrative device, I liked catching a brief glimpse of Alex's life, backstory, and current status as an OPFOR soldier in the US Army. The transition from the "everyday" (Edelson will make you feel heavily for the guys who work as OPFOR and their dangerous mission) to the tropical compound is handled with a well-balanced suspension of disbelief. This is important in works that involve sci-fi elements, otherwise I would've spent the entire time shaking my head and rolling my eyes at this story. I did none of that here - I was hooked in for the ride.What impressed me most about Edelson's writing is that even though I could see he drew extensively from his own experiences in the military, and I am a well-experienced "troper" who can usually predict plot turns and cliches - Edelson did a skillful job of keeping me guessing at the mystery of what happened right until the last few pages, and it was still not something I could have predicted.I give this book 5 stars because Amazon's rating system does not let me give it 4.5 stars. I have very, very minor quibbles with some characterization choices; these can be dismissed easily by recognizing the story is presented from Alex's point of view, but it's a credit to the author that I wanted to know more details about some of the characters he created. I wish when the mystery unraveled that some additional details had been given about the timeline of events leading up to how Alex found himself at the tropical compound.Again, these are minor quibbles that only highlight what an immersive and engaging world Edelson managed to construct in such a tightly woven narrative.While this is a self-contained story with a definite beginning, middle, and end, I certainly wouldn't object to revisiting the world of Seed in future installments and reading more about the adventures of the cast and delving deeper into exploring what kind of future these people have to look forward to.If you like mystery, it's here. I found this book while searching for something to read, and I picked it up for my kindle.4.5 hours later I was done reading it.It was that addictive.Written from the 3rd Person, Seed tells the story of Alex and... well mostly the end of the world as we know it. I really don't want to spoil anything more than that.Alex is not quite an every-man, but most assuredly isn't a superhero either. He is a human. A human with a particular set of skills that make him who he is and guide him to make decisions, some OK, some not so OK, and some that are just needed.The book flows very well, Michael doesn't jump from character to character or timeframe to timeframe. We are watching the life of Alex, sometimes we want to scream at him, sometimes we want to give him a big hug and say "its OK". But we can't and thus, we keep turning the pages of this book until it is complete.It was well worth the time I invested in it.I found shades of John Scalzi and, dare I say it, bits of Heinlein. But rest assured, the work is something different than both.For those of you into an apocalyptic novel with shade of a warning about today's world, this book will hit home.
